And that’s a wrap on Wimbledon 2016… congrats to Andy Murray for winning the men’s singles and Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen for winning the mixed doubles title. Andy sobbing into his towel at the end was too much, tennis players crying always gets me! Also thrilled to see Heather and Henri win in yet another amazing story having never played together before. It was a great day for the Brits as Gordon Reid won the wheelchair men’s singles and Jordanne Whiley and her partner, Yui Kamiji won the wheelchair women’s doubles.
It’s been a fantastic three weeks and I hope you have enjoyed my coverage of the grass court season here on Moo’s Tennis Blog. I have so many lasting memories from my trips to both Eastbourne and Wimbledon. Any new readers, please stick around as i’m here all year! I will be taking a week off (because i’m falling asleep as I write this haha) but i’ll be back soon. Also, I still have my big trip of the year to New York and the US Open to come so there will more photos! Read on for Match Points from Wimbledon 2016 with highlights from the women’s tournament.
Singles Champion
Serena Williams defeated Angelique Kerber, 7-5 6-3 to win her 7th Wimbledon title and her 22nd Slam. It was another superb Slam final with Serena’s serve and her prowess at the net helping her to the victory. For a full recap of the match click HERE.
Doubles Champions
Serena Williams and Venus Williams won their 6th Wimbledon title, defeating Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova in the final, 6-3 6-4. Again, the scoreline may mask the fact that this was a fabulous doubles match! There were so many entertaining points :-).

Always nice to see a player breaking new ground at a Slam!
This was after one of the rallies of the tournament in the Radwanska-Cibulkova match. I think even the crowd needed a lie down after this one!
Beezus.
Bencic was sorely missed during the clay court season. She’s such a great personality for the WTA tour and there were so many highlights from just her first round match! Fingers crossed she’ll be back soon and fully fit for the grass court season in 2017.
Haha CoCo!
Eeek Ekaterina!
This made me laugh because of where the racquet ends…
And a fitting GIF of the singles and doubles champ!
Best points/shots
The best rally from the Radwanska-Cibulkova match.
The best rally from the S.Williams-McHale match.
Two great points from the S.Williams-Kerber final. The first rally was the shot of the match from Kerber!
Radwanska produced some magnificent hot shots in her third round win over Katerina Siniakova.
Halep won “Play of the Day” on both Monday and Tuesday!
This was a remarkable shot from Lucie Hradecka in a richly entertaining doubles match with her partner, Andrea Hlavackova up against the Williams sisters.
Memorable handshakes
Radwanska has been criticised before for her handshakes before but this was wonderful to see after such an incredible match.
Just lovely from Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sloane Stephens 🙂
Amra Sadikovic apparently asked Serena for a hug at the net 🙂
This was such a tough loss for Beth from three match points up but still a classy moment up at the net.
I feel like there were so many great acts of sportsmanship from the women this fortnight. This was great to see!
And an honourable mention to the girls final where Anastasia Potapova defeated Dayana Yastremska… two names to watch out for in the future!
Press Conferences/Interviews
It was great for Elena Vesnina to get more of the limelight this week because she’s great in press and both thoughtful and engaging to listen to.
Chin up, Aga!
I liked this from Pavs.
Andrea Petkovic and Daria Kasatkina were both honest about their struggles with adjusting to the grass.
Loved this from Daniela Hantuchova.
Annika Beck is lovely!
Petra’s giggles give me life.
Venus talked about her dramatic rain-delayed victory over Daria Kasatkina.
I’ve grown even more fond of Timea Bacsinszky these past few weeks having got to watch one of Timea’s press conferences live in Eastbourne and ask her a question (the highlight of my life haha).
I’ve been impressed with Madison Keys this year, even if Wimbledon was a slight letdown. She’s awesome in press.
Kerber was classy as always, giving Serena all the credit for the win.
Serena spoke about her new mindset in the final press conference.

This was fantastic from Matt Zemek about the women’s fourth rounders.

Venus Williams was the highlight for me besides of course Serena’s 22ns slam.
I loved Venus’s matches, and her resilience, and not giving up attitude. I have a lot of respect for Venus for what she has done both on and off the court and how she has carried herself throughout the years.
I loved Serena reciting Maya Angelou’s “still i rise”, it was a highlight for me.

Yes, yes and yes! Loved that video with Serena you mentioned. Elena Vesnina reaching the SFs was also a personal highlight for me. One of the nicest players on tour so it was great to see her have such a banner tournament.
