Well that was eventful… Serena beats Vika in RG R3

SerenaA quick post to acknowledge what we just saw with our eyes. In the most anticipated women’s match of the tournament so far, Serena Williams came from a set and a break down to defeat Victoria Azarenka, 3-6 6-4 6-2 in a compelling third round match. There were so many talking points to this match, of which the beaming one was the line call with Azarenka serving at *4-5. It produced this from the pair…

Personally, I thought it was Vika’s point. Whatever decision Kader Nouni had made in terms of giving the point to Vika or replaying the point as is what happened, someone was going to be very upset. Azarenka had played a stunning first set. She was returning marvellously well and her backhand was on song. Serena looked on edge and unsettled. She struggled on return for much of the first set and a half, unable to find a balance between going for the outright winner and keeping the ball in court. The big turning point came as Azarenka served at *4-3 in the second set when Serena won a huge point. I can’t even remember when that point was, this match has rendered me TIRED!

As Vika’s game tailed off, Serena started to settle. The key thing for me was the angles she introduced into her game. They really started to hurt Vika. Add to that, more returns in court and the momentum really swung around. I was impressed how Vika began the third set, but it didn’t last as Serena rolled through the last six games. This was quite the comeback from Serena and I really thought in that second set she was toast. It’s another tough loss for Azarenka. I’d like to see her play two grass court tournaments, but she’s currently only down for Birmingham. She’s playing some good ball at the moment but another loss like this will hurt. There’s no doubt her game tailed off after such an encouraging first set. Serena appears to have just played herself into the tournament which is a rather scary prospect for the other women in the draw…

Thoughts on that match?!?!?!

  1. The first set and the first half of the second set Vika was on fire. The last half of the second set and final set Serena was on fire. I’m starting not to be a fan of Vika, she acted like she wanted to beat Serena . Vika and Caro are annoying by arguing with umpire in mostly every game they played. I think Vika is jealous of Serena. They will keep ping ponging Vika between Serena and Sharapova. How can one person get 6 unlucky draws. I will say Vika is serving better now than before.

    • Vika always has this brash personality, she can’t help herself. I’ll forgive her this one time though( as if it even matters) cause she still provided a very competitive match. Definitely serving better.

But, and this is what riles me up about her. She knows she’s been sidelined with injuries for a while, she knows she is a talented player, so why don’t you get back your conditioning by playing more tennis again. Sharapova played herself back into the No.2 ranking so she is on the opposite side of the draw to Serena. Tears were bubbling on Maria’s face in her match against Stosur because she said she was worried about that match-up(being sick and all) and really wanted to win. Victoria still has her top 10 talent. Believing you are a top player is half the battle, playing and conditioning yourself up the rankings is the other half. Then, you will not ‘seem’ to be getting these ‘unlucky draws’. Then, Victoria, you can sustain your intensity through a match and make your own luck in spite of an honestly tough draw.

      • The people in charged of the draws hate Vika. All her tournaments they gave her tough draws. Why not put her in Bouchard or Halep section. Vika needs to do what Halep did, by winning all the small tournaments to rise quick in ranking. I think they will gave her Serena or Maria at Wimbledon in the 3rd round again, which is sad. But as you pointed out she needs to play small tournaments or they will keep sticking it to her.

    • If you are good, whatever draw you can win too. I think Serena has the worst draw in RG 2015. Halep can win in any routine WTA tournament because she can avoid some big hitters unlike grand slams. This is also means that she may be lucky to be a one slam or two slam winners if she has lucky draws. If not, I don’t think she can win a slam if she can’t make it soon. There are so many young girls can potentially beat her such as Muguruza, Keys, ……

      • Vika is definitely a top 4 player. You think if they keep giving Maria Serena or Petra in the second round, she would win? The draw matters or Bouchard would of stayed around 30th in the world and not a top 10 player. Serena always get tough draws 90% percent of the time. And since Halep and Bouchard cracked top 10, they keep getting ridiculously easy draw. The WTA wants these 2 to win a slam badly. The draw matters and people doesn’t want to see a final with Bouchard getting plummeted by Maria ,Serena or Petra.

  2. I watched the match on itv4 with sam smith and Marion Bartoli and they both said Kader Nouni made the right call and vika definitely did not help herself emotionally with the way she reacted and argued. Later in the third they both also pointed out a bad call from Kader when vika hit a ball out the stadium, clearly on purpose, and should have had a point penalty after her earlier warning in the match, so they both were on the wrong side of a couple of interesting calls…

    • Ahh ok, everyone seems to have a different opinion! Yep I agree that Azarenka should have got a warning (and a point penalty) for hitting the ball into the crowd. I completely forgot that ITV are covering Roland Garros, I’ve been watching on Eurosport.

      • Yeah I prefer the commentary team on Eurosport but don’t have it on my TV! It was great match though and nice to see vikas getting better and better. I think after a battle like this serena should be pretty unstoppable now, it’s seems she always has one difficult match at a slam she either tanks or manages to pull through and win the tournament.

      • I actually quite enjoy watching matches without commentary, there’s very few commentators I actually approve of! I’d agree, there’s always one match that seems to make or break a tournament. I’d be surprised if Serena doesn’t go on to win it now.

      • Froo or however you say it and Nigel Sears are my least favourites. The former is like your Grandad who thinks he knows everything about everything and refuses to believe he is ever wrong or that any other opinion can be valid. And Sears honestly seems to talk out of his arse most the time. I remember the Ivanovic/Sharapova epic with the infamous MTO and he went on and on explaining this problem that Ana supposedly has which brought it on…only for everything that actually happened in the MTO and the press afterwards to indicate it was absolutely nothing alike.
Castle and Petchy are insufferable with ATP matches though, I agree.

      • Serena offered to gave her the point but the umpire said replay point. And Vika was rude to Serena. Vika should know the game ain’t over till you win 6 games in 2 sets. In sports anything can happened .

      • Chris Bradman on eurosport gets repetitive especially with serena matches. He’ll ask obvious questions over and over again to jo durie. During ever single serena match he’ll say to join durie “is Serena the greatest server of all time?” Why’s he asking a question he already knows the answer too and that he asks million times before to the same commentatory partner. I understand sometimes you have to repeat things but what annoys me Is he acts like he never asks the questions before and I’m sitting there thinking you say the same thing all the time. I know it sounds picky. I do however prefer the eurosport commentatory to the itv4 unless marion bartoli isn’t commentating

  3. I only saw the highlights since the match time was swapped around (ARRRRGH!) but it looked like Azarenka played pure brilliance in the first set and a half whereas Williams struggled with her footwork (surprise surprise). After going down a set and a break Serena just seemed to decide she was going to hit the ball as hard as physically possible and the extra pace meant Vika couldn’t take the ball on as early as often. Then in the third Serena settled and played the way she should have all along,

  4. It was a tale of two matches, if there ever is such a thing.

Personally, I would have given the disputed point to Azarenka. Technically, the umpire was not wrong either in allowing a ‘let’. But, drama just can’t escape these two women. And throwing ‘shade’ Serena’s way in a such a bruising encounter is asking for her to fore go any leniency.

Victoria was pure gold the first set, early into her stride, and effectively shut Serena down. Rookie mistake in breaking her own momentum by arguing at the end of the 2nd set( remember her past temperament issues). Then, Serena was finding her game and had Vika sussed but I felt Victoria still could have forced a tie break. Very Smart angles from Serena because Victoria is not really conditioned for tough long grinds.

Balanced by the third set, but Serena had sunk her teeth in already and it’s had to shake her off( Eye of the tiger). Vika was rushed, couldn’t control the weight of the shots anymore. Serena was efficient, no repeat of Madrid.

  5. Whatsoever you like or dislike, Serena has won the match. No ones can count her out until they really win the last point. Personally I don’t quite like Vika sportsmanship. Like it or not she is not a very honest person from what I saw in the past including AO 2013.

The commentary team like Chrissy, Shriver and some other always try their best ways to condemn Serena whenever they have a chance. I wish the future TV can filter the commentary (only) from the background.

I agree with your comments regarding commentators on matches, likewise there are very few I like,I would like to give a huge shout out to former Aussie tennis player,Fred Stolle, who commentates at Roland Garos,Fred is a former winner at RG and thank goodness he understands clay tennis,he is fair in his comments to either player he commentates on,some of the commentators I just mute, most of the time I prefer to watch a match on TV muted.

  7. This is a most impressive stat for Serena Williams.Serena’s win was her 50th win at Roland Garos, making her the first women in history to have won fifty matches at each of the four Grand Slams.
