Wimbledon 2015: Photos from Wawrinka-Verdasco and Sharapova-Begu

On Friday, I was on No.1 Court with my mum. She got lucky in the public ballot and very kindly decided to take me! It was nice to show her around as she hadn’t been for ten years and so much has changed at Wimbledon since then. I knew we were going to be in the gods but I can now confirm that row ZA on No.1 Court is the BACK ROW. Actually, the view was much better than I was expecting and at the back you get this platform behind you where you can dump your bags so it gives you much more leg room. I have to be honest that I was disappointed with the schedule. We stuck around for the Wawrinka-Verdasco match and half a set of Sharapova-Begu and then I spent most of the day on the outside courts. Here are some my photos from those two matches.

The first match of the day was Stan Wawrinka against Fernando Verdasco. I had a feeling that this could be a really close match. As always, I was wrong haha. It was actually close for much of the match but it was classic Fernando to be honest as he kept throwing in double faults on key points. A bad service game in each set was pretty much the difference. Wawrinka was a little wasteful in the third set and Verdasco did well to save nine break points including coming back from *0-40 down on two occasions. However, Wawrinka finally made his pressure pay. Stan played well and there was one awesome backhand down-the-line that the crowd oooed and arrrred for quite a while. He was surprisingly vocal throughout the match. I stand by my prediction that Stan will have his best ever performance at Wimbledon this year…

I have to admit that i’m not a fan of Maria so I wasn’t too thrilled about this match. I was hoping for Sloane-Lucie or Beth-BMS or Azarenka-Mladenovic but knew we would get Maria who hadn’t been on No.1 Court yet. We stuck around for the first half of the first set. Maria made a slow start but she broke back in the next game where Begu had two game points for a *2-0 lead. I never felt Begu had the mental toughness and experience of playing on this stage to threaten Sharapova. The Romanian player did well for a time to make it competitive, but Sharapova came through in straight sets, 6-4 6-3. There was a little wobble at the end as Sharapova was on course for the bagel.

  1. Well done to your mum for getting ballot tickets, alas so far I have never been lucky in a ballot I have tried for.My friend actually got lucky two years ago at the USO,I wont give up trying.Great action shots James!

    • Normally I have four family members who go into the public ballot and in the past, normally one of us has got tickets. Last year we were all unsuccessful but this year two got tickets! I thought it was getting tougher after the Olympics and the success of Murray but it varies year to year.
