WTA Eastbourne, 2nd Round Matches: Tuesday is going to be AWESOME

I don’t have time to do full previews as i’ve been working on my photos tonight and will be releasing a round-up of Monday’s action soon. Anyway, here are a few quick thoughts about some of tomorrow’s matches. I’m so excited about this order of play. SO EXCITED.

Eastbourne CC

Centre Court Matches

Ekaterina Makarova v Johanna Konta: Konta has had a really solid grass court season and beat Diyas in straight sets in the first round. Makarova comes in cold but is the Bourne-GOAT. I’d fancy a close-ish match. Prediction – Makarova in 2 tight sets.

Eugenie Bouchard v Alison Riske: See preview (Already regretting my prediction)

Belinda Bencic v Madison Keys: See preview above

Jarmila Gajdosova v Caroline Wozniacki: Gajdosova can be one of the best ball strikers out there when’s she firing but it’s often only for short pulses. I don’t think she will have the staying power to threaten Caro. Prediction – Wozniacki in 2 sets

Elina Svitolina v Heather Watson: The crowd really got behind Watson today, but it sounded like (from the reliable source of Twitter) a horrible match. Svitolina is playing her first match on grass this year so could be vulnerable. I’d still back Elina though. Prediction – Svitolina in 3 sets

Court 1 Matches

Caroline Garcia v Andrea Petkovic: For the brief moments I saw of Garcia’s match against Vinci, I was impressed. Petko did not play well in Birmingham in her match against Siniakova and I think she will struggle here. Prediction – Garcia in 2 sets

Sloane Stephens v Carla Suarez Navarro: All these good matches are too much for my brain to cope with! Sloane v Carla! This one i’m on the fence with and i’ve decided I won’t watch it as i’ve seen CSN at RG and Sloane yesterday. Sloane was shaky in closing but i’m going for her in this one. Prediction – Stephens in 2 tight sets

Agnieszka Radwanska v Irina Falconi: Falconi has been playing much better of late but still, even in Aga’s form, it would be a real surprise if she lost this. Prediction – Radwanska in 2 very tight sets.

Lucie Safarova v Dominika Cibulkova: This is obviously my number one match that I want to watch! I’m pleased Domi is back and i’ll get some photos of her tomorrow, but I think/want/hope Lucie should come through. Prediction – Safarova in 2 tight sets

Flavia Pennetta v Svetlana Kuznetsova: Another great match-up! Flav hasn’t played any matches on grass, while i’ve been impressed with Sveta on grass although that’s not difficult since she hadn’t won on this surface for ages. Prediction: Kuznetsova in 2 sets

Bets of the rest

Karolina Pliskova d. Casey Dellacqua in 2 sets *I think Karo will make quarters and still have plenty in the tank*

Tsvetana Pironkova d. Sam Stosur in 3 sets *this should be fun. Stosur 4-0 H2H lead but Pironkova rules grass*

Angelique Kerber d. Coco Vandeweghe in 3 set *Angie may want an early exit before Wimby, I hope she doesn’t overplay and almost would like her to go out!*

Polona Hercog d. Garbine Muguruza in 3 sets *I really need to go to bed, i’m making stupid predictions…This makes no sense to me but my rationale is that I have been impressed by Polona and I still haven’t seen Garbine!*

Barbora Strycova d. Sara Errani in 2 sets *Babs all the way*

Camila Giorgi d. Daria Gavrilova in 3 sets *This could be a DELIGHT*

I’ll try and tweet during the day so give me a follow if you haven’t already @MooTennisBlog 😀

  1. Intriguing matchups today. Talking about Kerber not tiring herself out, I rather think Pliskova should be careful too. Peaking well for Wimbledon is very important and I think it’s about time she caused some waves in a true major tournament.

Lucie Safarova is match ready with Dominika Cibulkova coming back from injury. Unless Cibulkova plays a blinder going for the lines, Lucie’s got this covered. I still want to see Cibulkova play, she usually never finishes the second half of a WTA season well, but seeing as she is coming back from injury and rest, I hope she brings some oomph with her.

On grass, I’ll lean towards Sloane over Suarez – Navarro. It’s Radwanska’s loss of form that is disturbing. Even after early round losses, she hasn’t comeback any better or smarter. I wonder if she is carrying/hiding some injury. I do like seeing her in the mix with the top players simply because she plays a different brand of tennis and if you need someone to throw a spanner/wrench in the works, she is the one. I may replace her with Timea Bacsinszky to spoil the party for some come Wimbledon. With Daria, I still feel she played too much tennis early on in the season. Not a bad thing, very good experience but, the top girls who pick and choose will expose her in major tournaments. Going for Muguruza just because.

  2. Lovely match….and Watson was so very emotional getting the crowd support which made her cross the hurdle….Svitolina was never in her groove in the third set after losing a tight 2nd set.

  3. Well as per trading perspective i see a clear “No Value” in this match up between Canadian Princess and Swiss heartthrob. This match can go to three sets and a lay value exists on the loser of first set that tooonly after seeing the first set scenario.
Bouchard’s game and technique is so good only that she realizes that she had to be mentally strong also
and lose the choker tag if she really want to be a consistent top 10.This game is under Bouchard’s racket
and hopefully the confidence bookmakers are showing on young Bencic will turn upside down!!!!

    • I don’t think Bouchards technique has ever been very good, actually. She’s good at rushing opponents but players have realised that she really can’t cope when being rushed herself.
