WTA ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Quarter-Final Preview: Camila Giorgi v Yaroslava Shvedova

GiorgiFor the first time since Katowice, Camila Giorgi has won back-to-back matches on the WTA tour. After a shaky spell where Giorgi was especially erratic, the Italian played has secured wins in Rosmalen over Irina Falconi (7-5 6-2) and Michaella Krajicek (6-7 6-2 6-4).  Neither were particularly convincing wins; Giorgi served up 17 double faults in her match against Krajicek. Giorgi plays Yaroslava Shvedova in the quarters, who knocked out the number one seed, Eugenie Bouchard in the first round. In the third set of that match, Genie was up 4-0 30-0 and had game points for a 5-1 lead. However, Shvedova fought back in convincing style, winning the last 11 points of the match. Bouchard played well at the start of the third but it went away from her after losing a few tight games. Bouchard’s serve started to falter with a number of double faults and Shvedova began to rush her into making mistakes from the baseline.

Shvedova has had some excellent results on the grass so it’s no surprise she’s hit the ground running this year. She arrived this tournament late having competed in the women’s doubles final at Roland Garros on Sunday. Shvedova reached the last 16 of Wimbledon in 2012 and 2014, and also reached the quarters in Rosmalen last year. This will be a first career match-up between Shvedova and Giorgi. I don’t really know why i’ve chosen this match to preview because I haven’t got a clue who wins. Shvedova can get nervous, but she’s also a brilliant ballstriker. Giorgi can take the time away from anyone, but it depends how consistent she will be. There will be errors and there WILL be double faults as she doesn’t really have a second serve. It’s one of those matches where I can’t really give a valid reason and this is based on instinct… going for Giorgi.

  1. Camila can be a very erratic player especially when she gets into a final:) where she has had woeful results, she will need to cut down on her UFE,I am picking Shvedova in this match up,where on grass I feel she is the better player, hopefully her nerves wont play a part in this match.
