The first seed to fall in Nottingham was Karin Knapp who was *technically* upset by Yanina Wickmayer. It doesn’t feel like an upset though as Wickmayer is a much better player than her current ranking of 92 suggests. It was the second time the pair had played this year and both matches had the same outcome. Wickmayer won, 6-4 6-2 in 80 minutes and advances to the second round where she will play Bojana Jovanovski. The 23-year-old Serb won her first round match against Nicole Gibbs, 6-4 in the third set. After winning just five matches between Shenzhen and Madrid, Jovanovski almost doubled her match wins in Rome where she qualified and beat both Caroline Garcia and Madison Keys en route to the third round. Jovanovski seems somewhat of a forgotten name on tour. Her game, like Wickmayer, doesn’t have many dimensions but when it comes together, can be very effective.
In my pre-tournament predictions, I went for Jovanovski based on a one-sided head-to-head… I think I was looking at the wrong head-to-head because Wickmayer leads it, 4-0! Wickmayer has won their last three matches all in straight sets. Despite the difference in ranking with Jovanovski 38 places higher, i’d give the nod to Wickmayer based on that H2H and generally, being a touch more consistent. I’d fancy Jovanovski to win at least a set in what should be a hard fought match.

A Jovanovski win wouldn’t surprise me, as I quite like her on the grass. I wish the grass season were longer still as I like seeing some strange names go deep based on their suitability to the surface.
