Serena Williams defeated Lucie Safarova, 6-3 6-7(2) 6-2 to win her 20th Grand Slam title and 3rd Roland Garros title. I have a mixture of emotions right now. I was sad immediately at the end, but that’s slowly fading and now i’m beaming with pride. Firstly, congrats to Serena Williams. Personally i’m not a fan, but she is a tremendous tennis player and I have great respect for all that she has achieved. This must have been one of her toughest ever routes through a Grand Slam draw. Five of her matches went the distance and in fact the final against Lucie was the only one where she won the first set and lost the second. Against Victoria Azarenka and Sloane Stephens, she was just a few games away from going out. She’s done the Aus Open-RG double and lost just one match this year… what will be important for her now is to get fit and healthy for Wimbledon.
So now to Lucie… as I just tweeted, i’m so proud to say that I am a fan of Lucie Safarova! Considering this was her first Grand Slam final, she performed admirably well. At the beginning, she was overwhelmed purely by Serena’s sharpness and booming serves, as opposed to the nerves of the situation. She was playing reasonably well although she kept getting caught out on her backhand and wasn’t moving well to that side. Serena won the first set and then started rolling, up a double break in the second set. The majority had already written Lucie off on Twitter. While I didn’t expect such a fightback, one of my greatest narks is when people start calling a result when the match is still going on.
Lucie never gave up and kept fighting in this match. Serena’s level dipped and her serve started to falter but Lucie just kept plugging away. She got more looks at second serves, started to hit more aggressively and get more backhands in the corner back. Serena though broke again at 5-5 and served for the Championship at 6-5. The game Lucie played was just incredible! I want to watch it again as it’s such a blur. The winner she hit to break… it’s possible there may be some complaints from my neighbours because I SCREAMED SO LOUD. And the tiebreak… Lucie didn’t show any nerves as she went ahead and more importantly, stayed ahead! Again, sorry to my neighbours. I was a bit excited.
As Lucie went up 2-0 in the final set, I believed she could do it and started to feel nervous. I was watching this match by myself, but I was thankful for tennis Twitter. I love knowing there are other nutters (haha) like me feeling the same way. Unfortunately (well from my point of view) Serena came back to win the last six games of the match. Lucie can be so proud of her efforts, both this fortnight and in this match. It’s been an absolute ball to follow this tournament and I hope she can keep this form up. These two weeks and the final should give her so much belief and confidence going forward. Lucie is now a top ten player!
I’ll leave you with some screenshots from the trophy ceremony.
A big thanks to everyone for reading all my posts during Roland Garros. I hope you enjoyed all the previews and photos from RG, and thanks for the comments. Normally, i’d take a break now but it’s grassssss court season! I’ll try and get some thoughts about next week’s draws out tomorrow. Furthermore, i’ll be attending Eastbourne for three days and i’m at Wimby for at least one day so lots more photos and different pieces coming to accompany the previews and reviews. I’ve just booked the WHOLE TWO WEEKS off for Wimbledon so i’ll have so much more time to watch tennis and devote effort to the blog. This is the exciting time of the year and i’m loving it right now 🙂 I appreciate all your support and hope you’ll keep following (and spreading the word pleasee!) about Moo’s Tennis Blog.
