Poland were crowned champions of the Hopman Cup today after Agnieszka Radwanska and Jerzy Janowicz won the pivotal mixed doubles rubber against Serena Williams and John Isner. It was an exciting final match, which saw one point have to be replayed and all four players unhappy with the poor umpire. Once again, i’ve found myself relying on YouTube to catch up with the best of the Hopman Cup this year. I’ve been following Lucie’s matches closely and it was an encouraging first week of 2015 for her. Here are YouTube highlights from her singles matches and a few other moments that made this another memorable Hopman Cup.
I’ll be following my favourite players a little more closely on the blog this year to try and hopefully share more features of interest. The Czech Republic were in a great position to qualify after wins over Canada and Italy. Safarova won her first four matches of the tournament including straight set wins over Eugenie Bouchard and Flavia Pennetta and victories with her partner, Adam Pavlasek in the mixed doubles. In the third of Lucie’s singles matches, she went up against the world number one, Serena Williams. In one of the best singles matches of the tournament, Lucie served for the match and came within two points of the win, but just couldn’t get over the finishing line.
Hopefully Lucie can build on the positives of this match. I know this was essentially an exhibition, but any win over Serena should not be taken lightly. Once again, Safarova showed she has what it takes to go toe-to-toe with the best players on tour, but just came up short. I still question whether she has the belief in herself that she can beat the top players. She’s still not there yet, but the progression over the last year or two has been very encouraging. There is no doubt she has made significant strides mentally and i’m looking forward to following her progress throughout the year. I believe she has what it takes to crack the top ten…

Moo, thoroughly enjoyed this write up. It is hard for us Americans to keep up with thE action at the beginning of the year , and rely on good blogs like yours.
And thanks to you, I am firmly on the sha-FA-zhava bandwagon. She’s exciting when she’s in control, and fun to watch since she’s clearly having fun out there.
