WTA Stuttgart QF Predictions for Friday

Day 4 – 4/4

Mladenovic d. Suarez Navarro in 3 sets – Mladenovic arrived in Stuttgart following two comprehensive wins in Fed Cup and she’s continued with two straight set wins against MLB and Kerber. Nice to see CSN back to some form but I think an in-form Mladenovic and on this quick surface will edge this one.

Sharapova d. Kontaveit in 2 sets – Interesting match-up, pondered two and three sets because Kontaveit has been in superb form. Sharapova has produced a high level through her first two matches, considering the gap of 15 months in playing. Wondering if there could be a dip in this one but i’m still leaning towards Sharapova.

Halep d. Sevastova in 2 sets – The last time the pair played, Halep won with a double bagel! Sevastova should get on the board this time round and has picked up two solid wins to reach the QFs. I said pre-tournament that I liked Halep’s recent form and nothing has changed after a good first win over Strycova. She looks in control of her game and emotions so i’d fancy her to win this match.

Siegemund d. Pliskova in 3 sets – The match-up i’m most intrigued about on Friday. Pliskova was clutch against Vandeweghe but I feel this is the perfect surface and tournament for Siegemund and she is smart enough to use that to her advantage.

WTA Stuttgart R2 Predictions for Thursday

Day 3 – 3/6

Siegemund d. Kuznetsova in 3 sets – 50/50 on this one, Siegemund at home is very dangerous and I think she could get under Kuznetsova’s skin, both with her game and antics! Siegemund won their last match in Madrid last year on clay. Gone against original draw challenge, just a feeling I had tonight…

Konta d. Sevastova in 2 sets – Interesting match, particularly on clay. Sevastova did secure a big win over Konta at last years US Open and is much mmore comfortable on the clay. However, Konta has a match under her belt and the quick surface will help her out on serve.

Sharapova d. Makarova in 2 sets – Tough turnaround mentally for Sharapova but she has always thrived in this match-up against Makarova, never losing a match to her fellow compatriot. Makarova was pretty clutch to beat Radwanska in straights in the first round but I do wonder with a rather emotional temperament whether she can handle the occasion and win. I’m intrigued to see how Sharapova’s serve will fare. I’d fancy Sharapova to prevail…

Kerber d. Mladenovic in 3 sets – Kerber has won all three previous matches but sensing this could be an upset alert. Mladenovic is having a fine year and has pulled off some big wins already this year. Kerber will have the crowd on her side, but she goes up against an aggressive and in-form opponent. Again, on the fence…

Vandeweghe d. Pliskova in 3 sets – Again, I could see an upset but I just don’t know which way to go with all these matches! Vandeweghe has caused Pliskova quite a few problems before and her two wins have both come on quick surfaces. All depends on which CoCo turns up and Pliskova has become much more consistent. As much as I don’t want to see this happen, i’d give CoCo a fair shot at the upset.

Suarez Navarro d. Vesnina in 3 sets – Should be a close one, I actually nearly went for Vesnina. CSN won their two previous matches in straight sets and seems to be slowly coming back. Vesnina was very positive against Kasatkina and I think she could get the win if CSN sits back too much on the defence.

WTA Stuttgart R2 Predictions for Wednesday

Day 2 – 1/2

Halep d. Strycova in 2 sets – Impressed with what I saw of Strycova in her win over Brady. She wasn’t tested but this one will be different against a coming-into-form, Halep.

Muguruza d. Kontaveit in 3 sets – Not convinced by Muguruza, particularly with all the withdrawals, but my hunch is that this might be one of those matches she might scrap her way through. Kontaveit is playing at a high level right now. I have a few concerns if she could close out the win if she got into that position but it also depends on where Muguruza’s level is at. A lot of question marks!

WTA Stuttgart R1 Predictions for Wednesday

Day 2 – 3/6

Suarez Navarro d. Korpatsch in 2 sets – This will be the biggest match of Korpatsch’s career as she has never played a top 50 player before. CSN’s form seemed to be coming back in Monterrey after an injury-affected start to the year and she’s at home on the clay, even on this faster surface where she has posted some decent results in the past.

Konta d. Osaka in 3 sets – Love the way that Osaka battled through qualifying and I think that grittiness might help her get a set here. Not entirely convinced by Konta on clay yet and she had a brutal weekend in Fed Cup which was emotionally taxing.

Sharapova d. Vinci in 2 sets – I am very excited to see how this one goes down! Impossible to say how Sharapova will get on but my feeling is she’ll start sharp. I’ve never been convinced by Vinci on clay although the faster surface suits her (I remember she won on indoor clay in Katowice before). The Italian’s recent form hasn’t been great but i’m sure she will be up for this one!

Kasatkina d. Vesnina in 3 sets – First time match-up, not sure what to make of this one! Kasatkina much more at home on the clay compared to Vesnina but it’s much faster.

Lucic-Baroni d. Mladenovic in 3 sets – Really intrigued by this match-up and wrote about it in length in my main draw preview. It’s been a good H2H for MLB and confidence is sky high.

Ostapenko d. Vandeweghe in 3 sets – Oh this should be fun! Another tough one to pick a side, gone for Ostapenko because she has had three matches on this surface and Vandeweghe has had less time to prepare after Fed Cup.

WTA Stuttgart R1 Predictions for Tuesday

Day 1 – 3/6

Strycova d. Brady in 3 sets – Brady got the LL spot after Cibulkova’s withdrawal having fallen in the final round of qualifying to Ostapenko in three sets. This will be a first time match-up and should be a fun one! Strycova’s form since the Australian Open has dipped a tad and she hasn’t been quite as reliable these past few months. I don’t think clay is her surface so I could see this being a very close match.

Stosur d. Sevastova in 2 sets – I like this match-up for Stosur, she played a very solid match against Sevastova earlier in the year in Doha where she won, 7-5 6-4. Sevastova’s a decent clay courter but I think the quick indoors clay will suit Stosur more and the Aussie player will be able to use it to her advantage.

Kuznetsova d. Bertens in 2 sets – Bertens is back on her favoured clay but so is Kuznetsova! It’s Sveta and her first match on clay so nothing would surprise me if this goes the distance. The Russian player has been so good of late in her first matches at tournaments.

Siegemund d. Zhang Shuai in 2 sets – The pair played a superb match in Brisbane, which Zhang Shuai won, 4-6 7-6(4) 6-3. I’d fancy a different result in Stuttgart where Siegemund will be more comfortable on the surface and have the home support, which I think she will thrive upon.

Radwanska d. Makarova in 3 sets – Radwanska has won their last three matches in straight sets but I was actually quite close to 50-50. In truth, i’m not convinced by either player’s recent form. I think Radwanska is severely lacking in confidence and the loss to MLB in Miami was a tough one to take. Equally, Makarova has been poor of late and she has lost the reliability that dominated her game from a few years ago. A slight edge to Radwanska’s consistency but if Makarova can find some form and finish the points quickly, particularly on this faster surface, then the upset will be there for the taking.

Konjuh d. Kontaveit in 3 sets – This is actually my match of the day and i’d be so there if I was in Stuttgart! Let’s pray for the balls because these two can hittt the ball. Kontaveit has won a lot of matches in the past few weeks and has got the measure of these courts in qualifying. Still, I think it’s one that could go either way. Kontaveit has a brilliant game but still worries me at times when in a winning position. I think if it were to get tight, Konjuh might be the calmer of the pair.
