That’s a wrap for RG22. In Saturday’s singles final, Iga Swiatek defeated Coco Gauff, 6-1 6-3 in 68 minutes to win her 35th consecutive match, sixth consecutive title and second Roland Garros title. Just a remarkable run!Β Read on for my final post from RG22. It’s now time for the grass. Planning to be back for Eastbourne π.
Final Notes π
TG. Too good! Swiatek produced another brilliant performance in a final. That’s now nine finals won in a row and still, no more than four games dropped in any of the sets won in that streak. Nothing new with the tactics. Swiatek was inside the baseline, pouncing on anything short in the rallies and crunching winners off both wings. The forehand has been the star of the show this fortnight and entire year. Backhand down-the-line was looking pretty sharp in that second set though!
The only area where Swiatek wasn’t perfect was at the net. In the first set, Swiatek won only one of five net points and often went to Gauff’s backhand instead of the forehand. Swiatek was also down an early break in the second set, playing a wild opening service game. It was just a small detour though as Swiatek quickly reassumed focus and control.
Gauff looked visibly nervous at the start. Hey, it’s totally expected. I was nervous just watching. All the errors were coming off the forehand and while she did settle down, that wing always looked vulnerable. Sad to see Coco in tears at the end but I guess it’s a release of everything building up over this long two weeks? Crying is good! Such a classy speech. Seriously though, who would have been able to rival Iga today?
So that’s two Slams in the books in 2022 and the pre-tournament favourite and world number one has handled all the pressure and expectation to come out on top at both. I think that’s a shock in itself! I really don’t have much more to say. TG and Iga is so much better than the rest of the field right now. I’m already looking ahead to Wimbledon. Iga is still building experience on the grass so it’s going to be fascinating if she can maintain this winning streak on the green stuff.

A few blog shout-outs for RG 2022. I have updated my French Open page with the 2022 reports here. I have also created a page with all of my Slam guides here. Some of the information might be out-of-date but hopefully there’s some useful hints and tips for anyone planning a trip in the future!

I got the champ right but who didn’t?! Gauff to the semis too. Two out of eight for the quarters so mostly a sea of red π.
