Thursday’s Set Points, Australian Open 2017 Day 11: Rolling back the years, a Serena-Venus final!

Set PointsThis will be the final Set Points of the 2017 Australian Open. I hope you’ve enjoyed the daily updates and you can catch up with them all HERE. This Australian Open has been one of the most memorable Slams in years. In the first of the women’s semi-finals on Thursday, Venus Williams fought through a tight three setter to reach her first Slam since 2009 and 20 years since her first ever Slam final. It’s hard to put this achievement from Venus into words after everything she has been through.

In a decent semi-final, Venus dropped her first set of the tournament but rebounded in classy fashion to defeat CoCo Vandeweghe, 6-7(3) 6-2 6-3. CoCo played some sharp tennis in the opener but with some smart play and increasing clutchness on serve on the big points, Venus turned it around in her favour.

Venus’s celebrations were EVERYTHING. If you’re ever feeling sad, this is your go-to video.

And this is your go-to GIF.

The stats of the Venus-CoCo match are below – the key stat was CoCo’s break point conversion. The second and third sets were much closer than the scoreline suggested.

Here is Venus’s post-match interview. I loved her reaction at 2:09 in the video!

CoCo was understandably disappointed in her press conference.

Serena Williams defeated Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the second semi-final to confirm the all-Williams final. Serena was much improved on serve as she produced a very clean and measured display to win, 6-2 6-1 in just 50 minutes.

Loved this moment at the net between Serena and Mirjana.

Serena’s press conference is linked below.

It was nice to see Mirjana taking in the moment at the end but also Serena acknowledging it too.

Sooo… a Serena v Venus final. I still can’t get over this and how unlikely it was at the start of the tournament as Venus arrived in a cloud of uncertainty with the arm/elbow injury that had forced her to pull out of her second round match in Auckland. The poll is up for the final and a preview is planned for tonight since I was able to watch most of the semi-finals. Operation catch-up sleep starts tonight and while I have work tomorrow, a 6am alarm is like a lie-in to me right now haha!

And finally, love to see the new creations by @FanofBencic on Twitter!
