WTA Best of 2016: Funny Moments

The next of the off-season posts is a collection of funny moments on the WTA tour, a lighter take on the 2016 season. In case you missed my three Best of 2016 posts from last week, you can find them at the following links; for handshakes and hugs and awesome sportsmanship click HERE, for the best points click HERE and for best shots click HERE.

The go-to-GIF for trying to keep up with all the news on the first two days of a Slam.

My favourite GIF from the Australian Open.

After Daria Gavrilova won an absolute nailbiter against Kristina Mladenovic in the third round of the Australian Open, she came out with an interesting choice of words in her post-match interview with Rennae Stubbs before quickly realising what she had just said!

Jelena Jankovic trying to take a bag off her racquet… enjoy.

The joys of watching any match involving Barbora Strycova.

Agnieszka Radwanska and Roberta Vinci put on a masterclass in Doha with this Aga winner sending the commentator, Guy McCrea into a giggling mess!

A funny Bara GIF!

Francesca Schiavone’s reaction to winning Rio was glorious.

Lucie Hradecka’s reaction to her coach on a changeover in Indian Wells was classic.

Caroline Wozniacki’s impression of Zhang Shuai’s grunt in Miami…

Love this reaction from Karolina in the trophy ceremony from the doubles final at Indian Wells.

One of my favourite things about 2016 was the emergence of Daria Kasatkina… this interview from Indian Wells was everything haha!

Andrea Petkovic and Jelena Jankovic joined forces once again in Charleston after last year’s hilarious uncensored video. It’s well worth lasting out for the entire video, you won’t regret it!

When Sloane got a car for winning Charleston…

We probably won’t get any more of these videos since Lucie and Rob have parted ways but this was my favourite of the year from Charleston.

Love this reaction from Francesca Schiavone and Alizé Cornet in Katowice after a wondrous stop volley from Fran.

The WTA posted another emoji video this year with more players and more emojis! Aga was the star of the show.

Picture the scene in Rome… Venus Williams serving at *4-5 deep in a third set against Timea Babos after nearly three hours of play. Perhaps not the best time for the poor ballkid to have the most spectacular tumble. It’s when the balls going flying everywhere… 😂

Timea Bacsinszky in press in Rome… haha!

Watching on repeat for hours and hours.

Classic caption!

“Apologies for the language if you heard it”…errr yeah, we heard it. Sorry Petko!

Haha Belinda!

These pictures of Aga are just the BEST.

The Connecticut Open in New Haven is one of the best tournaments for producing engaging social media content… this was brilliant!

Yulia Putintseva had a moment at the US Open. Dasha’s response was hilarious.

Watching Monica Niculescu flap her arms in fury was one of the most glorious and surreal moments of my US Open experience. You can always rely on René to GIF the moments that matter ;-).

This may be my favourite GIF of the year. Monica’s reaction is classic!

Caroline and Ana having a moment at Newbury racecourse.

Bank Holidays rule.

Ohhh Madison.

Johanna Konta’s shock at realising she had played Madison Keys before was amusing.

Genie has been great value on social media this year!

“How many points have I won? I’m useless”… Oh Madison.

When Domi forgot her ballgirl in Singapore…

Daria Gavrilova and Daria Kasatkina went on holiday together and this was both odd and hilarious in equal measures.

And finally, the WTA Cracker Challenge.

  1. Some good ones there James; I still find it amazing (in a good way) that Sloane could win Charleston without previously knowing (or anyone telling her) that she’d get a car as a prize.

    My favourite WTA Challenge was the one where a number of players were asked to spell other players’ surnames. There’s one none of them got;

  2. They are fun.

wozniacki complaining about zhang’s grunt was the highlight for me.

i didnt see them here but there were some matches where strycova and niculescu very organically just sat on the court in exasperation after losing a point, both niculescu and strycova are fun to watch on court.
