Set Points: Highlights from Day 6 of the 2016 Australian Open

Day 6 certainly had its moments, headlined by an eventful first night match on the Rod Laver Arena. The match between Madison Keys and Ana Ivanovic was halted early into the second set after Ivanovic’s coach, Nigel Sears collapsed. It was a dreadful situation but thankfully, it sounds like Nigel is doing OK. Ivanovic played some of her best tennis in agesss to lead by a set and a break, and then also 3-0 in the decider. It was a wacky match with so many switch-ups in momentum but in the end, Keys came back for an excellent win, 4-6 6-4 6-4. It was an encouraging performance from Ivanovic considering the circumstances. Here are ten moments from day 6 that stood out…

Set Points

The biggest upset of the day saw Barbora Strycova defeat Garbiñe Muguruza in straight sets, 6-3 6-2. While i’m sad we won’t get to see Vika-Garbi, Vika-Babs should be a fun one. Here’s an interview with Strycova… I love her reaction when the interviewer brings up that she plays Azarenka in the next round.

To see all the support for Makarova in the comments section of the Makarova-Pliskova preview, it made me think that we may all have underestimated Pliskova… however once again, it was not to be for Pliskova who won just five games. Makarova, aka the Bourne-GOAT, is in full swing again, and looks to be the favourite (in my opinion) to reach the semi-finals.

Shuai Zhang’s run at the AO continues… I think it is a fabulous story and who knows how far she can go?!

Victoria Azarenka’s form in 2016 has been exceptional.

And here are some awesome photos of Vika from Jimmie48.

Angelique Kerber has come up with some awesome shots on match points for her last two matches. I’m thrilled to see her in the second week of the Australian Open.

Another fun Kia Motors Open Drive, this time with Alizé Cornet.

A little bit of ATP… here’s a typically crazy rally including Monfils but what a point from Robert!

This was an incredible shot from Ivan Dodig…

And finally, I love this pic… the Australian summer of tennis is definitely on my bucket list!

  1. Regarding the Ivanovic v Keys match, for the life of me Why was Keys attacking Ana’s fhand? thank goodness she went to Ana’s bhand wing then the court was open to her for her fhand. One of the most pleasing aspects of this match was Madison dug in and didn’t go away, yes she made more UFE than winners,I understand this was a very emotional match for Ana under the circumstances, again her Ball Toss let her down in crucial moments resulting in double faults.Keys still has to understand ‘controlled aggression’ she dosen’t have to power hit every ball.Hopefully sooner than later that will sink in:)

    • It was a very, very, very strange match all around, I couldn’t really get my head around it! I’m impressed Keys managed to get the win because i’d written her off several times during that match. Her game is so big, trying to harness it is always going to be a challenge. I’ve been impressed with her mentality so far this week even if the game has been a bit all over the place. Overall, I wasn’t expecting much from Ivanovic but I thought she played well to start with and then such tough circumstances later on. I think she can build on this week…

    • I think Ana would have won had Nigel not collapsed. Im shocked she agreed to play today to be honest. But it wasnt an embarassing loss for her and she’s back winning matches at least.
