Two players who have had their greatest Slam success at the US Open are looking good once more with Flavia Pennetta and Sam Stosur going head-to-head for a place in the 2015 US Open quarter-finals. Stosur won the US Open back in 2011 with a stunning run to the title that included the performance of her life in the final against Serena Williams. Pennetta’s results at this tournament have been consistently impressive. Pennetta has reached the quarter-finals at the US Open in five of her last six appearance including a career best result in 2013 where she made the semi-finals.
Pennetta has dropped two sets en route to the second week. In the third round, Pennetta defeated Caroline Wozniacki‘s conqueror, Petra Cetkovska in three sets, 1-6 6-1 6-4. I heard such great things about the Cetkovska-Wozniacki match and watched the highlights this afternoon… wow i’ve missed watching Petra play. It’s such a shame that injuries have thwarted her career. Stosur lost just nine games in her first two matches, defeating Timea Babos in the first round who she had lost to in her last match before the US Open in Cincy. In the third round, Stosur beat Sara Errani, 7-5 2-6 6-1, for her first win over the Italian since 2012. The match was all on Sam’s racquet; she hit 25 winners to 25 unforced errors in the first set compared to just 2 winners and 4 unforced errors from Errani. The former US Open semi-finalist can be a nightmare to break down so it was a decent win for Stosur to get through that one.
The Stosur-Pennetta head-to-head is a baffling one… Pennetta has won all six of their previous matches. Stosur has won just two sets in their six encounters and Pennetta won their last match at Indian Wells earlier this year, 6-4 6-2. Stosur has turned a few previous losses around just at this tournament against Babos and Errani. I’d still take Pennetta, the more consistent player and with the head-to-head success, to come through this fourth round match.
Prediction: Pennetta d. Stosur in 3 sets
