US Open, Day 5: Venus maintains dominance over Belinda, the serve was ON!

VenusIn perhaps the most anticipated women’s match of the day, Venus Williams produced her best performance of the summer by a country mile to defeat Belinda Bencic in straight sets, 6-3 6-4. It was Venus’s fourth consecutive straight sets victory over Belinda. Venus’s form over the summer had been shaky and even through her first two matches where she dropped second set tiebreak against Monica Puig and Irina Falconi, she hadn’t looked that assured on court. Venus started sharp against Bencic, laying down the gauntlet with an awesome first game. Venus struggled to get returns in early but soon found her range. She failed to convert on one of three break points at 3-2 up but then broke in Bencic’s next service game, breaking to love as the Swiss player threw in a poor game that ended on a double fault.

Venus’s serve was immense in the first set as she won 89% of first serve points and 50% of second serve points, losing just five points on serve. Bencic quickly went *0-40 down at the start of the second set but showed one of the reasons why she is so highly though of. The Swiss player dug in and won four of the next five games. While Venus started to make errors, Bencic was rock solid from the baseline and started to get more depth on her shots. However, 4-1 wasn’t enough. Venus’s game hit another hot streak as she reined in the next three games to level up at 4-4.

At a crucial juncture of the match at 4-4 in the second set, Bencic couldn’t convert on a game point as she failed to get enough first serves in and overpressed, making some uncharacteristic errors. Venus was plucky in this game, often having to play on the defence, but hanging in there. Venus served out the match convincingly to 15. Bencic could have done more in that final game but it wasn’t to be. Venus was fully deserving of her win, finishing with stats of 31 winners to 15 unforced errors. Venus’s ease at closing points at the net (18/22 net points win) was key again and this is proving to be a great match-up for the American player. It’s been an awesome summer for Belinda but Venus moves onto the second week of the US Open for the first time since 2010. In the fourth round, she will play Madison Brengle or Anett Kontaveit

  1. Disappointing that both Svitolina and Bencic are out, but hey ho. This could make an easier path for Serena to make the semi’s, should they both make the QFs.

  2. It was Vintage Venus, especially in that first set,Venus had a aggressive game plan and kept to it throughout the match, she didn’t allow Bencic into the match.Venus serve was on ‘song’,I have said this before Bencic really has to work on her serve, her 2nd serve is very attackable.Well done Venus it was a pleasure to watch you play this match!

    • Indeed! The best game plan. I just feel happy and sad at the same time when Venus plays like that. It’s vintage and at the same time, I know she can’t sustain such levels( the sadness).
