A Wimbledon quarter-final rematch between Agnieszka Radwanska and Madison Keys will be one of the star turns for Friday at the US Open. Keys is into the third round of the US Open for the first time in her career with two super quick wins over Klara Koukalova (6-2 6-4) and Tereza Smitkova (6-1 6-2). Keys played well in her second round match but was never tested by Smitkova who went away at lightning speed in the second set. As always, Madison was charming in her post-match interview, making fun of her tendency to hit a few errors…
Like Keys, Radwanska hasn’t been tested through her first two rounds with straight set wins over Katerina Siniakova (6-2 6-3) and Magda Linette (6-3 6-2). Keys and Radwanska last played at Wimbledon where the Pole won in three sets, 7-6(3) 3-6 6-3. It was a decent match and Keys’s best showing of the tournament, throwing in one duff service game towards the end. Radwanska leads the head-to-head, 4-0 although there was a definitely a sense for me in that Wimbledon match that Keys wasn’t far off.
Of all the match-ups in my draw, this was the one where I spent ages deliberating and kept using the tippex… I’m still feeling fencey. Keys is playing well but it’s fair to say she hasn’t been tested at all yet. Also, i’ve fallen into this trap so many times where Keys shows some promise but is unable to back it up. Radwanska will force the errors by getting one more ball back into play. Keys also struggled to do much with the return when they played at Wimbledon, breaking serve just twice during the entire match. If Madison plays a decent match, she is good enough to win this. There’s always a big if though!
The winner of this match will play Serena Williams or Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the fourth round. Serena’s second rounder against Kiki Bertens was painful, both for Serena and the audience. Bertens put up a great fight but errors galore cost her in the first set tiebreak. Mattek-Sands strolled past a super-erratic, CoCo Vandeweghe to reach the third round of a Slam for the third time in 2015. Serena-Beth should be a fun one, particularly if Beth brings her ultra-aggressive game.
Prediction: Keys d. Radwanska in 3 sets
Prediction: S.Williams d. Mattek-Sands in 2 sets
