US Open Day 5, 3rd Round Preview: Madison Keys v Agnieszka Radwanska

KeysA Wimbledon quarter-final rematch between Agnieszka Radwanska and Madison Keys will be one of the star turns for Friday at the US Open. Keys is into the third round of the US Open for the first time in her career with two super quick wins over Klara Koukalova (6-2 6-4) and Tereza Smitkova (6-1 6-2). Keys played well in her second round match but was never tested by Smitkova who went away at lightning speed in the second set. As always, Madison was charming in her post-match interview, making fun of her tendency to hit a few errors…

Like Keys, Radwanska hasn’t been tested through her first two rounds with straight set wins over Katerina Siniakova (6-2 6-3) and Magda Linette (6-3 6-2). Keys and Radwanska last played at Wimbledon where the Pole won in three sets, 7-6(3) 3-6 6-3. It was a decent match and Keys’s best showing of the tournament, throwing in one duff service game towards the end. Radwanska leads the head-to-head, 4-0 although there was a definitely a sense for me in that Wimbledon match that Keys wasn’t far off.

Of all the match-ups in my draw, this was the one where I spent ages deliberating and kept using the tippex… I’m still feeling fencey. Keys is playing well but it’s fair to say she hasn’t been tested at all yet. Also, i’ve fallen into this trap so many times where Keys shows some promise but is unable to back it up. Radwanska will force the errors by getting one more ball back into play. Keys also struggled to do much with the return when they played at Wimbledon, breaking serve just twice during the entire match. If Madison plays a decent match, she is good enough to win this. There’s always a big if though!

I’m torn…

The winner of this match will play Serena Williams or Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the fourth round. Serena’s second rounder against Kiki Bertens was painful, both for Serena and the audience. Bertens put up a great fight but errors galore cost her in the first set tiebreak. Mattek-Sands strolled past a super-erratic, CoCo Vandeweghe to reach the third round of a Slam for the third time in 2015. Serena-Beth should be a fun one, particularly if Beth brings her ultra-aggressive game.

Prediction: Keys d. Radwanska in 3 sets

Prediction: S.Williams d. Mattek-Sands in 2 sets

  1. Hopefully Madison will play a decent match:) she has the power to hit through Aga,fact remains can she?.Madison has to play controlled with controlled aggression, this will keep her UFE low, well hopefully:)like you James this match is a toss up for me,the courts at the USO should favor Madison,I will pick Maddison in 3 sets as well:)

    • For someone who hits the ball the hardest amongst the base liners on tour, one would have thought this match up would be a no brainer, maybe even lopsided in Keys’ favour. But her breakdowns are just silly sometimes. I figured her initially to be the perfect williams replacement for the USA. It just goes to show how important the mental aspect is to a good, consistent performance. She’s akin to Lisicki in a way, a very mighty weapon, but unreliable command and control center. I think playing at home gives her the edge, Aga will have to be at her best to win this.

  2. Serena had a shocker against Bertens,I suppose she is human after all?:) I am certain Serena will be out to have a good start in her match against Bethanie, who won’t give her the pace she likes.Serena in straight sets.

    • I don’t know why, I just feel Mattek-Sands is the wrong player for Serena to reassert herself with. Beth is indeed quick and if you are not tenacious she will be all over you like some bad rash. It gets irritating real fast. Serena will have to be calm and play with more smarts I think.

  3. I’ve been waiting for this preview since Keys-Aga was confirmed and, as a massive Aga fan, I’m heavily concerned. I think the perfect record against Keys will probably end today as well. If Keys has the letdown she’s been having after a couple of wins then sure, Aga wins, but she’s showed great focus in slams this season and she feels tormented by losses to Aga.

  4. Well done to Bethanie taking the first set off Serena 63.Serena cannot convert any of the BPS she has had, also over hitting her shots, her serve at times has also been off.

  5. Well I must say the 3rd set from Serena was one of the best sets of tennis I have seen her play this year, well done Serena defeating Bethanie in 3 sets,

Well done to Madison who defeated Aga in straight sets, just a blip at the end, when she got broken serving for the match, still she was in command of the match from start to finish, she plays Serena next.
