Just a quick preview of the women’s final in Cincy tonight (not before 3pm local time) featuring Serena Williams and Simona Halep. Not only did I miss both Cincy semi-finals because they were both in the evening session but i’m a busy bee today. My family are have a BBQ and i’m in charge of desserts. I currently have a 30 minute slot as my pastry rests in the fridge…
At the start of the tournament I didn’t think there was ANY chance of Halep reaching the final, let alone the third round. Halep, who will move up to number two in the rankings and claim the coveted number two seed at the US Open, enjoyed her most comprehensive win of the week so far, a 6-1 6-2 victory over Jelena Jankovic in the semi-finals. The same could be said for Serena who I expected to pull out. She lost a set in her quarter-final against Ana Ivanovic but hasn’t really been tested other than that, winning her other three matches in straight sets and defeating Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals, 6-4 6-3. It sounded as if Serena was not that impressive (particularly on serve) but got the job done.
Serena-Simona matches will always have some intrigue after Singapore last year; Halep won in round robin action, 6-0 6-2 before Serena exacted revenge in the final with a 6-3 6-0 triumph. The pair last played in Miami where Serena edged to the win, 6-2 4-6 7-5. It was an entertaining match although slightly overrated in my opinion as many were calling it the match of the year at the time. There were some great points but also large chunks of disappointing play from both.
I’m surprised Simona is still standing up but also, I expected a Serena withdrawal in anticipation of the US Open. Simona’s last three matches have all been at night so playing in the day could go against her if it’s a hot one. Now that Serena is in the final and up against Simona, it’s hard to believe that she won’t be motivated to give this one her all.
Prediction: S.Williams d. Halep in 2 sets
