WTA Doha, Quarter-Final Preview: Lucie Safarova v Andrea Petkovic

PetkovicOn Wednesday in Doha, Lucie Safarova claimed her first WTA top ten win since Wimbledon last year with a three set victory over Ekaterina Makarova, 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3.  It was another match I ended up watching on live scores (it sounds like everyone was!) and it was one of those matches that makes you age about 20 years.  Lucie came through a number of tight games to win the opening set, 6-2.  Makarova served for the second set, which she failed to serve out, but came back to win it on the tiebreak.  Lucie was always up in the decider but getting across the finish line was a struggle! Lucie had one match point with Makarova serving at *2-5 before the Russian player held.  The final game saw Lucie miss four (?) more match points.  Eventually, Lucie came through that game for her 6th main draw win of the year. I may have done a silent fist pump at work…

Safarova will play Andrea Petkovic in the quarter-finals after the German player came from a set down to beat Zarina Diyas, 5-7 6-2 6-4.  Petkovic had lost to Diyas last week in Dubai.  Petkovic has been playing a lot of tight matches lately, but she’s winning a lot of them which should give her plenty of confidence.  Petkovic leads the head-to-head against Safarova, 4-2.  Their last two matches have gone the distance; Safarova won in Beijing at the end of 2013 in an excellent encounter, 6-4 6-7(4) 7-6(2).  Petkovic won their most recent match in Charleston last year, 6-3 1-6 6-1.  I’m really torn with this match-up.  Petko has a good record against Lucie and her ability to get plenty of balls back will be crucial in this match.  Petkovic can be very vulnerable at the start of tournaments but once she gets going, she can be tough to stop as was the case in Antwerp.  Lucie has reached quarter-finals at her last three events, but has struggled to push deeper into tournaments.  In 2014, despite being very consistent throughout the whole year, Lucie made two semi-finals all year at Wimbledon and Moscow.  I am so torn on this match-up.  SO TORN.  Head says Petkovic and heart says Safarova…

Prediction: Safarova d. Petkovic in 3 tight sets

  1. Based on Lucie’s current form, I won’t be surprised she can win this one in 2. Petkovic was very lucky to win against Diyas based on match experience.

    • There are quite a few people who seem to be backing Lucie in straight sets. I’m wary of Petkovic, despite her not playing great lately. I think winning matches when not playing well can actually make a player very dangerous.
