ATP Australian Open, Day 3 Preview: Bernard Tomic v Philipp Kohlschreiber

As first round action continues to wrap up on Tuesday, there have been no major upsets in the men’s draw.  The highest seeded casualty so far has been Ernests Gulbis, but that didn’t come as a great surprise up against the talented teen, Thanasi Kokkinakis.  I must say that the schedule for day 3 is a little puzzling.  I’m all for the women getting more matches on the big show courts, but I am surprised they have opted for three womens matches on Rod Laver Arena with Ekaterina Makarova v Roberta Vinci getting the nod ahead of Andy Murray v Marinko Matosevic.  Makarova is the Bourne-GOAT, but still?

1. Bernard Tomic v Philipp Kohlschreiber (AO, R2)

Tomic 13In the third quarter of the men’s draw, if Bernard Tomic defeats Phillip Kohlschreiber in this second round match, an Australian player will be guaranteed to reach the second week.  The winner of this match will play either Thanasi Kokkinakis or Sam Groth in the third round.  Tomic’s chances of defeating Kohlschreiber seem to be favourable after he beat the German player in Sydney last week, 6-3 6-4 in the second round of the Apia International.  Kohlschreiber lost his first two matches of the year, but righted the ship with a comprehensive victory in the first round over Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-2 6-2 6-1 in just 85 minutes.  Equally, Tomic was impressive in a four set victory over Tobias Kamke, 7-5 6-7(1) 6-3 6-2.  Tomic displayed some wonderful variety at the end of the match, mixing up the play with some slices to diffuse Kamke’s power before finding the right shot to attack with.  A best of five set match is a whole different kettle of fish so I doubt this will be as comfortable as their Sydney clash.  However, I was impressed with Tomic in the first round and I do think he’ll keep winning on Wednesday.  As the attention and hype starts to surround Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios, these are ideal conditions for Tomic to push on and play some of his best tennis.

  1. Karlovic in 3 is my pick too so i’m liking that call from you Moo. I have gone the other way with Groth though. It’s bound to be a huge comedown for Kokkinakis with the crowd advantage taken away from him and coming up against a huge serving low ranked fellow countryman as opposed to the 11th seed. Hopefully things keep going to seeding in the men’s, it’s going to make for some tasty quarter finals!
