2014 Pre-Season Predictions: How did Moo’s Tennis Blog do?

I am slowly gearing up for the 2015 season and starting to crave tennis again. I’ve succeeded so far in ignoring all of the action from the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).  I’m sure it’s great and all that but personally for me, the off-season is the off-season and I need a break from watching tennis and time to actually discover other hobbies and you know, go outside.  Last December, I posted my WTA predictions and ATP predictions for the 2014 tennis season.  I thought it would be interesting (and tragic in some cases) to see how Moo’s Tennis Blog fared.  Let’s start with the women…

Serena

Here are some statements I made in my WTA predictions last year  Some spot on, some… not.

Petra will always be Petra and she is never going to be the most consistent player on tour, but I have a feeling she’s going to do well next year including winning another Grand Slam.

Petra will ALWAYS be Petra.  Nailed it.

I can see Wozniacki making a Grand Slam final (I am not sure why!) but I expect improvements all round in 2014.

I’m still not sure why, but heyyy that happened!

In my opinion, Bouchard will make two Grand Slam quarter-finals next year, win her first WTA title and crack the top 10.

Tick, tick and tick.  NEVER did I expect Genie  to go on and reach two Grand Slam semi-finals and a Wimbledon final.

I don’t see any Grand Slams for Sharapova though…

I thought Sharapova was going to struggle in 2014 and although she did struggle at the start, she still managed to shine through at some of the major tournaments and finish the year at number two in the rankings.

I predict Vika will add another Grand Slam to her kitty, most likely the US Open and maintain an entertaining head-to-head battle with Serena.

Ohhhh.  Azarenka spent large chunks of the season on the sidelines.  In the end, we saw just one match between Serena and Vika, which took place in the first week of the season in Brisbane.

I think Sloane will bounce back and put all the Serena dramas from 2013 well and truly behind her.  Now coached by Paul Annacone, a more rounded 2014 can  be expected and I expect her to creep into the top 10.

Oh James..  It looks silly now in hindsight, but I still believe that Sloane has the potential to go much higher in the rankings with her clean and hard hitting game.  It comes down to her application on the court and whether she’s ready to fight for it.

Next year, I predict that Petko will crack the top 20 again.

Yay for the Petko love!

It will take some time for Muguruza to reach full fitness, but I don’t think we have seen anywhere near her full potential yet and top 30 should be attainable next year.

Yes.  And top 20 as well!

Realistically, I could see Bencic break into the top 100 by the end of next year.

I thought when I predicted Bencic to crack the top 100 that I was being optimistic, but she blew that one out of the water.

And here’s my top ten predictions for the WTA compared to the actual season ending rankings for 2014…

All in all, i’m quite happy with this!  I had Halep and Kvitova both in the top 5, and Wozniacki and Bouchard in the top 10, but just the wrong way around.  My biggest triumph (i’m calling it a triumph even though I realise these are only predictions and I should calm down) was predicting Bouchard to crack the top ten.  When I posted my predictions last year, they got posted onto the Women’s Tennis Forums.  Predictably, I got destroyed by the majority of posters for overhyping Bouchard…

DjokovicAnd onto the men.  Here are some statements I made in my ATP predictions last year…

I believe that 2014 will mark the beginning of the slippery slope for Ferrer and despite a top 10 placing and  a couple of Grand Slam quarter-finals, in my opinion, these will be the highlights of 2014.

Slippery slope is a bit harsh, but a couple of Grand Slam quarter-finals as the 2014 highlight was pretty accurate.

I cannot see any Grand Slam wins, but I think he’s going to do better next year and will qualify once more for the World Tour Finals.

This is on point although I did have Federer at number six…

From the Australian Open to the World Tour Finals, there were peaks and troughs in Wawrinka’s form, but he remained relatively consistent over the whole year (2013).   Now comes the tricky part in trying to back that up… I think he can do it though starting with a final four showing in Melbourne.

Yes.  And then some.

I think Dimitrov will crack the top 15 next year along with Marin Cilic.

Meh. Not really pushing the boat out there.

Next to each other in the current ranking, I predict that Vasek Pospisil and Ivan Dodig will both end up in the top 20.

Holy moly.

Two players that I think will crack the top 30 are Joao Sousa and Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Wow. I just keep on giving.

I remain confident though that Janowicz is one to watch out for.  In 2014, I predict he will make another Grand Slam quarter-final and post a more consistent set of results.

Speechless.

And here’s my top ten predictions for the ATP compared to the actual season ending rankings for 2014…

It’s always been an aim with this blog to showcase everything predictions-wise, good and bad and i’m not afraid to look like a right tit.  Well, with many of my ATP predictions that was certainly the case!  Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the top five? Jerzy Janowicz in the top ten? It’s just dawned on me that I picked Tsonga to reach the Australian Open final too.  I really did believe he was going to have a good year.  Many of last year’s predictions were very reactive on my part from what happened towards the end of the 2013 season.  This was partly because I couldn’t see any notable up-and-comers on the ATP tour.   Let’s hope I can produce a more respectable set of predictions for 2015… 😉

Did you make predictions for the 2014 tennis season? Were you spot on or did you miss the mark?
