WTA Singapore, Day 5 Preview: Caroline Wozniacki v Petra Kvitova

KvitovaIn a blockbuster match-up that saw both players standing perilously close to the edge of an early exit in Singapore, it was Petra Kvitova who boosted her chances of progressing to the semi-finals with a superb 6-3 6-2 victory over Maria Sharapova.  After a poor performance in her first match against Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra started slowly and lost her serve in the opening service game.  However peak Petra soon made an appearance as she won nine straight games from 0-2 down to win the first set and then come mightily close to dishing out a second set bagel.  Sharapova hung on at the end, but she had left herself too much work to do as Kvitova sealed the win in 75 minutes.  Petra finished with excellent stats of 19 winners to 13 unforced errors.

In the first match of the day, Caroline Wozniacki continued to soar as she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets, 7-5 6-3.  I managed to watch the first half of the first set, which was brilliant; Radwanska played some stunning tennis, most notably hitting one magnificent volley in the seventh game.  However, Wozniacki was able to hang around, twice coming back from a break down to win the first set.  In the second, Wozniacki was unable to consolidate her first break of serve, but never looked back from *2-3, winning the last four games of the match.

Kvitova and Wozniacki are tied at 4-4 in their H2H and haven’t played for over a year.  It was Wozniacki who won their last match in Cincy, coming from a set down to prevail, 3-6 6-2 6-3.  That match in Cincy snapped a run of three straight victories for Petra.  Wozniacki has been so solid this week and if Petra has an off day, then Caroline can sweep up.  However, Petra displayed a marked improvement in her match against Sharapova and unlike her first match against Radwanska, which started gone 11pm, this one against Wozniacki will be in the afternoon.  The win over Sharapova was huge.  I’m going for Petra…

Prediction: Kvitova d. Wozniacki in 2 sets (1 tight, 1 easy)

*Update: Qualification for the white group is complicated, but below hopefully makes it clearer*

  1. It could go completely either way to be honest, but I’m going to go with your prediction of Petra in two.
It’d probably be worth Kvitova losing a set on purpose though so as not to wind up facing Serena in the semi’s because she has an AWFUL record against Williams.

    • I’d just take an in form Kvitova over an in form Wozniacki. Her performance against Sharapova is the most impressive of this tournament so far- she DEMOLISHED her!
