US Open 2014: That’s a wrap

Cilic

The final Grand Slam concluded on Monay night with Marin Cilic winning his first Grand Slam title with a 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory over Kei Nishikori.  I went to bed after two sets, but mentally prepared myself for the result… it’s still completely weird.  Cilic played magnificent tennis through his last three matches and is a fully deserving winner.   Kei had a superb fortnight, but it seemed like this was the match where he just ran out of steam.  I love how different the World Tour Finals line-up is going to be this year… Cilic will be up to number five.  FIVE!!!!!

In the women’s final on Sunday, Serena Williams defeated Caroline Wozniacki, 6-3 6-3 to win her 18th Grand Slam title  It was a disappointing match and Wozniacki never got going.  Over the summer, Wozniacki has been so much more positive in her play, but the final saw a return to the old Caro as she hit four winners (of which three were aces).  I wonder if it was nerves or if she was still affected by the illness she had before her semi-final.  In the second set, not many players could have thrown Serena off her rhythm though.  Serena played some of her best tennis this year; she danced through the draw and didn’t drop more than three games in any of the 14 sets she played.

In the TFF DreamTeam game, #teamwoz was our winner with The Federation in 2nd place and woo in 3rd place.  I’ve had a terrible year at TFF DreamTeam and finished down in 7th place for the US Open.  Thanks to all those who joined the league.  I’ll be setting up a league again for the 2015 Grand Slams… the next Slam is Australia! I have no idea where time has gone.

I will be taking my customary break from my blog after a Grand Slam.  I’m going on holiday this week, but am hoping to resume blogging for next week’s tournaments.  Thanks, as always, to all my readers for all your comments and support.  It still amazes me to see that people actually want to read what I write because at the end of the day, i’m just a tennis fan.  I achieved my daily record during the second week of the US Open, which I was absolutely chuffed about and we had over 400 votes in the final poll for Nishikori-Cilic… I hope you will keep supporting Moo’s Tennis Blog 🙂

As we move into the final few months of the season, i’m always on the look-out for interesting content to support my stream of previews.  If you are attending an event and are looking for a platform to share your views / photos, then I would be delighted to here from you! I’ll be doing more alternative posts in the off-season with my annual countdown of favourite matches in 2014 and my predictions for 2015.  If you have any general comments or anything you’d like to see on Moo’s Tennis Blog, then please don’t hesitate to get in contact 🙂
