Fourteen second round matches will take place on a jam-packed day in Toronto. Rain hurt the forecast for the second day running, but all the matches got completed. In one of two second round matches on Tuesday, Stan Wawrinka needed a third set tiebreak to get past Benoit Paire. In first round action, Ivo Karlovic beat Bernard Tomic in a third set tiebreak, two weeks after losing to him in the final of Bogota and Dominic Thiem lost the third set to Gilles Simon winning just four points… he must have been mega tired after Kitzbuhel.
1. Andy Murray v Nick Kyrgios (ATP Toronto, R2)
The best match on the schedule for Wednesday will see the 19-year-old, Nick Kyrgios face off against Andy Murray. The Australian player made a real name for himself at Wimbledon with a cracking four set victory over Rafael Nadal on Centre Court. Aside from the win over Nadal and the run at Wimbledon, there have been glowing signs throughout much of the year. He won a round at the Australian Open and was knocking on the door of the third round, racing up two sets to love over Benoit Paire before running out of stream. He also won two challenger titles back-to-back on clay in April. This kid’s got it all and I like the way he carries himself off court. He spoke in his post-match interview on Sky Sports that he had the belief if he plays and serves well, he can beat Murray. In his first Masters 1000 match, Kyrgios recorded a win over Santiago Giraldo, 7-6 7-5, coming back from 5-3 down in the first set. There was an article on BBC Sport today about Murray where he said that he is finally able to train at 100% after the back injury. I think he’ll beat Kyrgios, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Nick won a set.
