Montreal, Toronto, Tuesday’s 2nd Round Matches: Azarenka v Cornet

There are a handful of second round matches in Montreal and Toronto on Tuesday with Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka all in action.  First round action will also conclude at both tournaments.  On the first day of action, two seeds fell in Montreal; Sabine Lisicki produced one of her best performances of the year to take out Sara Errani (see full match recap HERE) and Yulia Putintseva beat Flavia Pennetta, who has compiled a disappointing 7-9 W-L record since winning Indian Wells.

In Toronto, the biggest upset saw Ivan Dodig beat John Isner in three sets.  This was Dodig’s first match since Roland Garros due to injury, meanwhile Isner won Atlanta just over a week ago.  Roberto Bautista Agut lost to fellow Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez and Julien Benneteau WON A MATCH, thumping Lleyton Hewitt, 6-1 6-2.  Tuesday’s match of the day is the late night encounter in Montreal at NB 1am in the UK… balls.

1. Victoria Azarenka v Alize Cornet (WTA Montreal, R2)

Cornet

Victoria Azarenka continues her quest to get back to form after three months on the sidelines with a foot injury.  She’s had some rough draws along the way; she met the fearless Camila Giorgi in her first match back in Eastbourne and in her first match on hard courts, played Stanford-loving and also Vika-loving (4-0 H2H), Venus Williams.  Her first match in Montreal will be against Alize Cornet.  The Frenchwoman has claimed some big scalps this year; she has defeated Serena Williams twice, in Dubai and Wimbledon, and took out Agnieszka Radwanska in Katowice after being dropped a first set bagel.  In Montreal. Cornet snapped a three match losing streak with a 6-3 7-5 victory over Lauren Davis.

Azarenka leads the H2H 3-0 with victories in Beijing (6-1 6-0 in 2012), Roland Garros (4-6 6-3 6-1 in 2013) and the US Open (6-7(7) 6-3 6-2, 2013).  The last two matches have been close and Cornet’s played some great tennis in their matches, particularly the first set of their match at RG last year. Cornet is a terrific competitor and she has proven this year that she is not afraid of pulling of big upsets.  Azarenka is not there yet in her comeback and Women’s Tennis Blog photographer, Jimmie48, reported she didn’t look too happy in one of her practices and seemed to have an issue with her left thigh. It’s going to be a tough match for Vika, but I think she will pull through.  I’m expecting fireworks and plenty of crazy…

Prediction: Azarenka d. Cornet in 3 sets

WTA Montreal 2nd Round Predictions

Eugenie Bouchard d. Shelby Rogers in 2 sets (1 tiebreak, 1 easy): A tough opener for Genie against an in-form opponent.  I could see her being on the brink of losing the opener before rallying to win in straights.

Agnieszka Radwanska d. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in 3 sets: BZS had a fabulous grass court season and started her hard court season impressively with a straight sets win over Roberta Vinci.  I think this could be a potential banana skin for Aga….

ATP Toronto 2nd Round Predictions

Roger Federer d. Peter Polansky in 2 sets

Stan Wawrinka d. Benoit Paire in 3 sets: Stan and Benny are BFFs.  Paire has won three matches at this tournament and may nick a set against Stan, who is likely to be rusty having not played Since Wimby.
