Match Recap, Wimbledon R3: Kvitova d. V.Williams, 5-7 7-6(2) 7-5

Kvitova

I just had to write something about this match! I managed to get back from work in time for the start of the second set and was throughly entertaining by a magnificent Centre Court contest.  Petra Kvitova defeated Venus Williams, 5-7 7-6(2) 7-5 in two hours and 30 minutes to book her spot in the second week where she will play Peng Shuai.  In the entire match, there were just three break points as Petra and Venus put on a remarkable display of serving.  Venus broke at 6-5* to claim the first set, her only break of the match.  In the second set, Venus served so well on the big points and Petra was rallying incredibly well from the back of the court; off both wings she was surprisingly accurate, but struggled to get a foot hold in any of Venus’s service games.

The second set deservedly went to the tiebreak and it was Petra who stepped it up.  Venus’s serve started to get a little wobbly and Petra capitalised, hitting an insane angle on the return on the second point to gain the upper hand.  At the beginning of the third set, Petra seemed to have momentum, but Venus hung in beautifully.  Venus started to raise her game at 4-4 where she earnt a 0-30 lead, but Petra earnt what would be the most crucial hold of the match.  Petra would hold and just two games later, broke to 15 to claim an absolutely monstrous win.

Petra and Venus have played on five occasions and all FIVE matches have gone three sets.  Without doubt, it is one of my favourite matches on the WTA tour and both players always seem to raise their level against each other.  I was so excited about this match and am feeling so happy that it delivered.  I’m a huge Petra fan so I was delighted she won.  I can’t help but feel sorry for Venus because she played a terrific match.  This could easily have been a quarter-final or a semi-final match.  Looking back, the level of Petra’s hitting at times was stunning.  She’s my finalist this fortnight and I am definitely sticking by that.  Petra has two days off to rest her hamstring and this match will give her a wealth of confidence heading into the second week.  Petra can go all the way in this form!!!!!!!!!
