Laura Robson produced another incredible performance to topple Li Na, 6-4 6-7 6-2 and make the second week of the US Open, which is the first time a British women has made the 4th round of a Grand Slam since 1998. She has also claimed her first ever top 10 win. I did not stand much chance for Robson in the third round, but she brought her A-game to the court and showed remarkable composure to recover from the disappointment of losing the second set tiebreak.
At Wimbledon in the mixed doubles, I felt edgy every time she hit a second serve, but this week she has looked confident on the serve and it has been a weapon, not a liability. Li was below her best but we have seen her play a lot worse this year. She will be bitterly disappointed not to have rode the momentum of winning in Cincy. Robson now takes on Sam Stosur… who knows?! Clijsters and Li have pretty similar games, but Stosur will offer something different. Stosur beat Varvara Lepchenko, 7-6 6-2 to make the 4th round, menawhile Marion Bartoli also booked her place iin the last 16 with a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic.
