Serena advances past tearful Lisicki in Charleston

Serena Williams has reached her first semi-final of the year at the expense of Sabine Lisicki, who had to retire from their quarter-final match down 1-4 due to an ankle injury.  Lisicki has had a history of ankle problems so it must have a very worrying situation for her.  There was a nice moment at the net as Serena tried to console an emotional Lisicki.  I am not a fan of Serena, but she has definitely shown a more caring side since her return from injury.  I hated her antics in the US Open final last year with the umpire,  Eva Asderaki, but i did like how she went and sat with Stosur after the match.  Lisicki went to get an MRI scan on her ankle after the match… fingers crossed it won’t keep her out for too long.

In other matches, Sam Stosur beat Venus Williams for the first time in five attempts to set up a semi-final clash with Serena.  The other semi-final will see Lucie Safarova play Polona Hercog.  Both were very impressive in dispatching the Russian duo of Vera Zvonareva and Nadia Petrova respectively.
