Tomic comeback stuns Verdasco in Australia

Fernando Verdasco
The match of the day on the men’s side was no doubt the second match on the Rod Laver Arena as Bernard Tomic produced a stirring comeback to beat Fernando Verdasco, 4-6 6-7 6-4 6-2 7-5.  Tomic looked visibly stunned that had he managed to beat the colourful looking Verdasco and later described the match as torture (see highlights below!). Verdasco was not the only seed to fall on day one as Ivan Ljubicic, Juan Monaco and Jurgen Melzer were all beaten.  I had tipped Monaco to reach the 4th round so I was particularly disappointed to see him lose a tight five set match to Phillipp Kohlschreiber, 7-5 4-6 6-3 6-7 6-0.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both came through their first round encounters without any real problems.  Federer came through a tight first set before strolling past Alexander Kudryavtsev, 7-5 6-2 6-2 and Rafael Nadal had no problems against Alex Kuznetsov, 6-4 6-1 6-1.  Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych also won through, but in 4 sets against tricky opponents.  Del Potro looked to be in trouble at the start of his match as he went down 6-2 in the first set to Adrian Mannarino, but recovered well to finish 2-6 6-1 7-5 6-4.  Berdych lost the second set to Albert Ramos, but was comfortable in the end to win 7-5 4-6 6-2 6-3.  I fancy both Berdych and Del Potro to reach the quarter-finals this week; Del Potro has a particularly straightforward draw although I have not been convinced with his form in 2012 so far.  Hopefully he can start to play his way into form…
