WTA Wuhan Final Poll for Saturday
WTA Wuhan SF Predictions for Friday
Day 6 = 0/2
I had a nightmare day at work so no posts today. Hoping to find time to watch the semi-finals tomorrow and have a final preview up in the evening.
Halep d. Kvitova in 2 sets – Take a bow, Petra! I was very surprised by her straight sets win over Konta, but pleasantly so. Halep seems to have the measure of Keys. Halep’s been superb for the past few months and has a 3-0 head-to-head over Kvitova to boot. Does Petra anything left in the tank after the Kerber match? I’m not so sure so Simona for the win, in her current form and confidence, but i’d personally like to see Petra keep on winning.
Kuznetsova d. Cibulkova in 3 sets – Surprised they haven’t met since 2011! Saw the end of the second set of Kuznetsova-Radwanska and was very impressed how Sveta closed out (in the end!) in the tiebreak. Yet again, Cibulkova gritted out a three setter. She’s such a brilliant competitor although not going to lie, I don’t like all the pomes and cheering on her opponent’s errors. Still, good job Domi and a nice comeback after some indifferent tournaments.
This is a huge match for Singapore qualification. Going for Sveta in three but again, very little confidence in this pick having only caught bits of their matches. Despite Cibulkova winning their last four matches (last one in 2011 as mentioned above) I don’t think there’s much to call between them and it could be that Kuznetsova being the fresher may be the difference. Remember Cibulkova in the Wimbledon quarter-final against Vesnina after that epic match against Radwanska…

WTA Wuhan QF Predictions for Thursday
Day 5 = 2/3
Konta d. Kvitova in 2 sets – Kudos to Kvitova for the incredible fight she showed in knocking out Kerber for the best win of her year. I think it will take something even more special to repeat it on Thursday. Add to all this, Konta’s looked superb in Wuhan so far.
Halep d. Keys in 3 sets – Not sure Madison has what it takes to keep the error count down. Halep will have confidence from their last two wins.
Kuznetsova d. Radwanska in 3 sets – Just a feeling for Sveta but note that this pick is with little confidence!

WTA Wuhan R2 Predictions for Tuesday
Day 3 – 12/13
Radwanska d. Makarova in 3 sets – This will be an interesting match because Makarova has beaten Radwanska on two previous occasions. I’d fancy Makarova to win a set but still going for Radwanska who at least has had a few days off since a tough loss to Wozniacki in the Tokyo semi-finals where she served for the match.
Kerber d. Mladenovic in 2 sets – Fascinated to see Kerber back in action so soon after the US Open triumph. Mladenovic has weapons but i’d be surprised if she can keep everything steady enough to upset Kerber.
V.Williams d. Putintseva in 3 sets – Poots can be a handful and she did beat Venus in a brutal match in Charleston earlier this year. I think this surface will suit Venus more as she comes in as defending champ.
Konta d. Zhang in 2 sets – Zhang’s playing some good stuff since the US Open and is at home which I think is an advantage to her. Still, I fancy Konta to come through in straights.
Muguruza d. Jankovic in 2 sets – Jankovic is finding some form again but she hasn’t won a set off Muguruza in three previous matches. Muguruza’s had a rough run by her standards but I still think the Spaniard will be too strong. I think the surface will favour Muguruza.
Kuznetsova d. Brengle in 3 sets – This has three set mess written all over it… Sveta just?
Kvitova d. Svitolina in 2 sets – If this goes three then I think Kvitova is in trouble with the heat and humidity. I’ll give Petra the benefit of the doubt who has actually won her last four matches against Svitolina including the last two very recently and both in straight sets.
Keys d. Garcia in 3 sets – Great win for Garcia over Lucic-Baroni in two drama-free sets. This is a coin toss for me with their games. I get the sense that confidence and energy might be low for Keys and I could see it going tight. If it does, Keys would always have the edge for me.
Wozniacki d. Siniakova in 2 sets – Slightly wary with Wozniacki and the leg strapping but I think she’ll get the better of Siniakova. The Czech player has had some good results but still seems to walk a tightrope with her temper.
Shvedova d. Vinci in 3 sets – I always go the wrong way with Vinci these days! Shvedova’s had some great results in the Slams this year. When she’s on, she is ON.
Strycova d. Doi in 2 sets – Instinct is with Strycova in this match. I think she’ll make life awkward for Doi.
Cibulkova d. Siegemund in 2 sets – I wasn’t sure about Cibulkova pre-tournament but she had a decent win over Cornet. Going purely on instinct that this will be more comfortable.
Kasatkina d. Chirico in 2 sets – Nice to see Kasatkina coming back to some form after a four match losing streak after the Olympics. I do like Chirico but if Kasatkina can stay calm, I think she has the beating of the American with her consistency and variety.
WTA Wuhan R2 Predictions for Monday
Day 2 – 1/1
Halep d. Begu in 3 sets – It’s been getting through the first matches that has been the struggle for Begu this year. When she has then she’s often been dangerous. Halep might be troubled by a hamstring injury so slightly wary about this one. We’ll have to see how Simona goes…
Suárez Navarro d. Wickmayer in 2 sets – Wickmayer won her first match since winning Washington on Sunday. CSN the more solid, particularly mentally, so i’d go for the Spaniard in two tight.
WTA Wuhan R1 Predictions for Monday
Day 2 – 7/8
Kvitova d. Ostapenko in 2 sets – Ostapenko is dangerous but hasn’t been playing well of late and with nearly enough patience to be contending regularly. Kvitova’s always a flight risk but I do think there have been more good days of late and Wuhan’s been a happy hunting ground.
Zhang d. Peng in 2 sets – Zhang’s recent form has been much the more impressive
Konta d. Beck in 2 sets – I like Konta in this match-up and generally for this tournament
Errani d. Strycova in 3 sets – Errani owns the head-to-head because Strycova always struggles to break down Errani, but the Italian player has been really struggling of late. I could see it going three but I think this is one of those match-ups that just favours Errani.
Pavlyuchenkova d. Doi in 2 sets – Doi’s year has been a baffling one; there have been some wonderful highs but too many strings of losses. The Japanese player is on another one right now, a four match losing streak since Cincy. Initial optimism for an improved Pavs has simmered somewhat after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimby although generally, the level has been much higher than the start of the year… not saying much! Pavs is definitely the safer pick for me.
Jankovic d. Gavrilova in 2 sets – JJ is prone to peaking in Asia and will have had a day off since playing the final in Guangzhou. Gavrilova skipped Tokyo with an achilles injury and hasn’t played singles since August. JJ also won their last match, 6-1 6-1 so everything pointing towards the Serb.
Garcia d. Lucic-Baroni in 3 sets – Helmets at the ready! Historically been a good match-up for Garcia but anything can happen with these two.
Sevastova d. Putintseva in 2 sets – Not trusting Poots at the moment after a very disappointing second round loss in Tokyo from match points up. Sevastova seems the more steadier and should have built some confidence from her run at the US Open. Watson d. Brengle in 3 sets – Watson has beaten Brengle twice before and the American player has won just one match since Eastbourne. It’s another match where everything’s pointing towards one player.. but this is WTA!
Svitolina d. Mattek-Sands in 2 sets – I can see Svitolina driving Mattek-Sands mad with her consistent game.
Kasatkina d. Goerges in 2 sets – Having to qualify for Wuhan was a blessing in disguise for Kasatkina as she snapped a four match losing streak to beat Hradecka and Parmentier. Goerges didn’t drop a set in qualifying so both players should have confidence on this surface. While I think she’s feeling the effects of the year, i’m going for Dasha.
WTA Wuhan R1 Predictions for Sunday
Day 1 – 3/4
Bencic d. Kuznetsova in 3 sets – It’s a 50/50 match for me but i’m leaning towards Bencic. Kuznetsova can be a bit of a slow starter after a long break from the tour although granted, she’s been much better than this year.
Makarova d. Lisicki in 2 sets – I’m sad about what’s happened to Lisicki these past two years because she’s capable of so much more. Two wins in Guangzhou was encouraging but i’d still be surprised if she can keep a solid enough level to challenge Makarova.
Wickmayer d. Rogers in 3 sets – Wickmayer was suffering with a back injury but seems to be playing regularly and pain free. She’s lost her last four matches since winning Washington but just a feeling she might bag a win in this one.
Puig d. Vinci in 2 sets – I’m intrigued to see how Vinci’s foot/leg injury has healed. Puig’s dangerous right now…
Bacsinszky d. Chirico in 3 sets – A tough match for Timea who hasn’t won back-to-back matches since Gstaad. Chirico has been on-off of late but did enjoy an excellent win over McHale to qualify. I’d fancy a tight three setter.
Begu d. Kulichkova in 3 sets – Thrilled to see Kulichkova back in action on the main tour after playing a limited schedule of late due to injury. She had two superb wins over Gibbs and Riske to qualify for the main draw. Begu’s been extremely erratic since the clay court season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an upset with Kulichkova but it may be a bit too soon after time away from the main tour.
