WTA Washington SF Predictions for Saturday

Day 6 – 2/2

Makarova d. Dodin in 3 sets – Both players into a first WTA semi-final of the year! Would have gone for Dodin but wondering what she has left in the tank for this match.

Goerges d. Petkovic in 3 sets – Petkovic leads Goerges, 2-1 in their H2H but they haven’t played since 2015. Mostly on the fence with this one with a slight edge to Goerges and confidence from match wins over the past month and the 5 match points saved in the second round. Petkovic will likely be more stable in her hitting, but hasn’t been in these deeper stages of tournaments for some time.

WTA Washington QF Predictions for Friday

Day 5 – 3/3

Halep d. Makarova in 3 sets – Halep was clearly struggling in the heat on Thursday but got the win in three against Duque-Mariño.The forecast looks to be cooler for Friday. Makarova is always a tricky opponent – she has won four of her last five matches against top ten players, and never lost before the semi-finals in D.C. I won’t be surprised at the upset. I’m going for Halep though who has a tendency to improve match-by-match and grow in confidence, even when not finding her game before.

Dodin d. Lisicki in 3 sets – Pray for the balls! First time match-up and a bit of a toss-up with their respective games. I’d favour Dodin purely for matches this year and more experiences of tight matches, which i’d guess this could be.

Goerges d. Niculescu in 2 sets – The pair are tied at 2-2 in their H2H, but haven’t played since 2012. I think a lot will come down to Goerges and from recent form, i’d fancy her to be playing at a consistent enough level to hit through Niculescu. The recent win over AVU from match points down will have been huge for confidence.

Petkovic d. Andreescu in 3 sets – Very impressed by Andreescu, but Petkovic has the experience and has looked in fine form herself this week. Disappointed this is the last match on so unlikely to watch as I think it could be a good one.

WTA Washington R2 Predictions for Wednesday

Day 3 – 3/3

Makarova d. Puig in 3 sets – A first meeting, instinct is for Makarova being a bit more solid in all departments.

Dodin d. Errani in 2 sets – Couldn’t get two players at opposite ends of the spectrum if you tried. The courts are pretty fast so would have to favour Dodin.

Goerges d. Van Uytvanck in 3 sets – Yet another first time meeting, fancy it to be a close one. Watched AVU at Roland Garros and she was very impressive.

WTA Washington R1 Predictions for Wednesday

Day 3 – 4/4

Bouchard d. McHale in 3 sets – Can’t make my mind up about this one. Both have been in poor form, McHale has probably played the better tennis of late, but she has really struggled to close out matches and let nerves take over.

Mladenovic d. Maria in 2 sets – Maria has won a lot of matches of late on the ITF circuit on both clay and grass. I’d guess Mladenovic, while not playing for a while, will still have too much quality and power.

Lisicki d. Grammatikopoulou in 2 sets – That’s a new name i’ll have to learn! Grammatikopoulou is playing her first ever WTA main draw match. A good opportunity for Lisicki although she is still lacking matches.

Niculescu d. Hibino in 2 sets – Hibino came from Nanchang which is one longggg flight. The Japanese player deserves a medal if she wins this one!

WTA Washington R1 Predictions for Tuesday

Day 2 – 2/4

Halep d. Stephens in 2 sets – Brutal opener for both, expect Halep to take some time to find her A-game on hard courts, but Stephens is still very much on the comeback. Halep leads their H2H, 3-2 and won their last encounter in Miami in 2015, 6-1 7-5.

Chirico d. Puig in 3 sets – A toss-up for me, Chirico has battled injuries and looked well short of her 2016 form. She did manage two confidence-boosting wins in qualifying. Puig hasn’t won back-to-back matches on tour since Acapulco in February.

Makarova d. Loeb in 2 sets – I’d go for Makarova although she has struggled more this year in beating players ranked below her in matches that you would expect her to win.

Watson d. Tig in 2 sets – Watson came through qualifying, struggling to close out both of her matches.  I think she has a great draw here though to make the QFs. Tig was injured at the French Open and hasn’t won a match since reaching the 3rd round of Miami in March.

WTA Washington R1 Predictions for Monday

Day 1 – 3/7

Davis d. Sabalenka in 3 sets – After a super start to the year, Davis’s results have been more inconsistent of late. Perhaps a return to hard courts will favour her. I haven’t seen much of Sabalenka – she enjoyed some decent results on grass and qualified for the Wimbledon main draw. This will be a first career match-up.

Giorgi d. Andreescu in 2 sets – Another first time match-up, been impressed with Giorgi’s form this year although she has wobbled closing out sets and matches. A great opportunity for Andreescu in only her second WTA main draw appearance.I’d guess that Giorgi’s power will prevail.

Rogers d. Duque-Mariño in 3 sets – Rogers is having a good year and reached R3 of both RG and Wimby. MDM has been winning plenty of matches on clay but question is whether she can translate that to hard courts. Rogers won their only previous meeting at Indian Wells last year, 6-1 4-6 6-3.

Petkovic d. Nara in 3 sets – Two former finalists in DC and another first career meeting. I’d fancy a closely contested match and instinct going with Petkovic, who I think is most comfortable on hard courts. She seems to be enjoying herself off court in DC from social media!

Goerges d. Abanda in 3 sets – Looking forward to this match, been keen to see more of Abanda. You can never be too sure at what level Goerges is going to produce, yet her form over the last month has been impressive with two final runs in Mallorca and Bucharest.

Dodin d. Jankovic in 3 sets – I’m sad what has happened to Jankovic this year with her confidence clearly at its lowest ebb. She did manage a win in Nanchang but it was just her ninth of the year. Dodin is about as unpredictable as they come, yet i’d have more belief in her getting across the finish line.

Cepelova d. Van Uytvanck in 3 sets – A toss-up for me, the pair have never played before.

Errani d. Ozaki in 3 sets – Errani has won just one of her last six matches, but I think this could be a good match-up for her against a player who has a similar game style. I’d go for Errani’s variety to be the difference.
