WTA Stanford SF Predictions for Saturday
Day 6 – 1/2
Muguruza d. Keys in 3 sets – Keys leads the H2H, 2-0 and won their last match in the SFs of Rome last year. Keys spoke in her press conference about feeling no pressure and going in as the underdog could be favourable for her. On the other hand, I wonder if her lack of matches will be an issue as Muguruza seems completely in the zone right now. Muguruza gave so little away against Konjuh and has the Wimby intensity there so far this week.
Vandeweghe d. Bellis in 3 sets – Switched round my winner from my draw challenge picks! So impressed by both players this week. I’m seeing a bit of a change in Vandeweghe and her attitude on court has improved in the last month or two. The confidence is there and so is the sharpness on her groundstrokes. Bellis will need to return well to get the win. Should be a fun one, 55-45 in favour of CoCo.

WTA Stanford QF Predictions for Friday
Day 5 – 2/4
Muguruza d. Konjuh in 2 sets – I didn’t have high hopes for Muguruza but she started out with a very encouraging second round win over Kayla Day. It’sw good to see Konjuh building from the grass court season, even if her first round win was via retirement. This will be a first time match-up, favouring Muguruza’s consistency from the baseline and speed of the court should give her chances to come in too.
Tsurenko d. Keys in 3 sets – I would have gone Keys in 3 but not so sure now after reading that the American pulled out of doubles with a wrist injury. Tsurenko’s playing well enough to take advantage if there’s an issue.
Pavlyuchenkova d. Vandeweghe in 3 sets – On the fence, both were superb in dominant second round wins. The pair are tied at 1-1 in their H2H and Pavs won their last match at Wimbledon last year, 6-3 6-3. Vandeweghe spoke very highly of Pavs in her press conference so she’s aware of the threat and will likely not underestimate which may be a good thing. Vandeweghe has the serve, yet I think Pavs has the game to stay with the American. Very intrigued by the outcome of this match.
Bellis d. Kvitova in 3 sets – Kvitova was superb on Wednesday, repeating that the next day is not always a given. Bellis wasn’t as impressive in her second round compared to the first round, but got the win in straightts. A risky pick but with home advantage, I think Bellis has a shot.

WTA Stanford R2 Predictions for Thursday
Day 4 – 3/4
Vandeweghe d. Gibbs in 2 sets – Vandeweghe only needed to play a set against an injured, Tomljanovic, while Gibbs was pushed to the brink by the wildcard, Liu. Imagine the match will be mostly on Vandeweghe’s racquet with the serve and greater weight of shot. Gibbs should be able to feed off the confidence from her first round win and clearly has an affinity with Stanford. Vandeweghe won at the same stage of Stanford last year, 2-6 6-4 6-2.
Riske d. Pavlyuchenkova in 3 sets – Pavlyuchenkova spoke in her press conference about working very hard after Wimby and i’d love to see her push on. This will be a tricky match with Riske doing well in her first round match to beat Linette in straights. Riske leads Pavs, 3-1 in their H2H and won their last match in Beijing towards the end of 2016, 7-6(4) 6-1.
Bellis d. Cepede Royg in 2 sets – Bellis was very impressive against Cornet. Expecting that Cepede Royg, who has had some battling wins through qualifying and in the main draw, to compete well here. Bellis was beaming after her first round win and seems to love this tournament, feeding off the positivity of it rather than feeling any kind of pressure.
Kvitova d. Bondarenko in 3 sets – Wondering how Kvitova’s abdominal injury is, Bondarenko is a big hitter and more than capable of causing some problems here.
WTA Stanford R2 Predictions for Wednesday
Day 3 – 3/3
Konjuh d. Vikhlyantseva in 3 sets – Match of the day for me from Stanford. The pair last met in ‘s-Hertogenbosch where Vik. won, 6-3 7-5. I remember from that Konjuh had had a gruelling match the day before and she missed a lot of key returns. I think it’s a good match-up for Vikhylantseva because she seems to struggle against variety and Konjuh relies mostly on power. Pretty much on the fence, 52-48 to Konjuh.
Keys d. Dolehide in 2 sets – While Osaka missed big at times, Dolehide was very impressive in her first ever WTA main draw win. This may be more challenging for Keys than their ranking would suggest.
Sharapova d. Tsurenko in 3 sets – Sharapova will likely have to serve a bit better than her first rounder and keep the ball away from Tsurenko’s backhand. After a slow start, Tsurenko was solid in her first round win over Arruabarrena so this won’t be a walk in the park for Sharapova by any means.
Muguruza d. Day in 2 sets – I’ve been really impressed with Day this year and her defence was expectional against Doi. She’ll likely need to be more aggressive against Muguruza, who I don’t expect to make the stream of errors that Doi produced. Very intrigued to see how Muguruza gets on…

WTA Stanford R1 Predictions for Tuesday
Day 2 – 3/5
Osaka d. Dolehide in 2 sets – Dolehide qualified for the main draw and will be playing her first ever main draw match. It’s rare for Osaka to be the more experienced player in a match-up!
Riske d. Linette in 3 sets – Riske leads the H2H, 2-0 and won their last match at the end of 2016 in Tianjin, 6-3 7-6(2). Linette is currently riding a four match losing streak.
Vandeweghe d. Tomljanovic in 2 sets – Vandeweghe has done well in Stanford before and the fast hard courts suit her game. I’m not so sure about Tomljanovic as she was unable to play the ITF final in Sacrament last week.
Cepede Royg d. Ahn in 3 sets – Cepede Royg has continued her good form since reaching the last 16 of the French Open by successfully qualifying for the main draws in Mallorca, Eastbourne and Stanford. VCR came through a wild final qualifying round match vs. Sachia Vickery, 6-3 4-6 7-5. Ahn has had some good results of late too after reaching the semi-finals of the ITF Sacramento tournament.
Bellis d. Cornet in 2 sets – Pick of the first rounders for me, fancy Bellis to have the edge. The American played well in Stanford last year.
Schiavone d. Bondarenko in 3 sets – Schiavone has won all three previous matches, yet they haven’t played since 2012. Another late night thriller?
WTA Stanford R1 Predictions for Monday
Day 1 – 5/5
Tsurenko d. Arruabarrena in 2 sets – Tsurenko has won their two previous encounters in straight sets. I have noticed that Tsurenko has dealt with quite a few injuries this year so tentative!
Day d. Doi in 3 sets – Been deliberating over this match and have gone for the 17-year-old in the end. Doi’s had a rough year and I sense she is a confidence player. Both players have lost their last three matches.
Konjuh d. Erakovic in 2 sets – Erakovic survived a gruelling three setter in the final round of qualifying on Sunday. I feel like I am writing the same about most WTA players but Konjuh is another player that is very hard to predict! I’d go for Konjuh’s power and nerve to prevail.
Vikhlyantseva d. Lao in 3 sets – I don’t know a great deal about Lao who did well to win both her qualifying matches on Sunday in straight sets. An interesting match for Vik. against a player she is expected to beat by ranking.
Sharapova d. Brady in 2 sets – I’m expecting to wake up to a Sharapova win but who knows…
Gibbs d. Liu in 3 sets – I’d go for experience in the end but I won’t be surprised if Liu grabs a set.
