WTA Moscow QF Predictions for Thursday
Day 4 – 2/4
Kasatkina d. Sasnovich in 3 sets – Impressed with Kasatkina today and she seems to have a spark about it, even with the end of the season so near. I definitely feel she is tougher, both physically and mentally, compared to this time last year. Sasnovich is an excellent player indoors so a tricky match awaits. Kasatkina leads the head-to-head, 2-1.
Lapko d. Begu in 3 sets – Belarus are having a great week in Moscow and good timing with the Fed Cup final later this month. Begu’s win over Sevastova was one of her best of the year. I don’t know a great deal about Lapko but she’s won a lottt of matches this year and is into a first WTA quarter-final at the age of 19. A toss-up for me as Begu has not been that reliable or consistent in 2017. Lapko a surprise package so I could see this one going either way.
Cornet d. Vikhlyantseva in 3 sets – Intrigued by this match. Vikhlyantseva produced a serving masterclass against Vesnina. I think Cornet is a decent returner and she’s not only spoken a good game off the court but looked impressive on it.
Goerges d. Tsurenko in 2 sets – This has been an interesting match-up and it was Tsurenko who won their last match at Wimbledon, 6-7(5) 7-6(8) 6-4 in a 2h45 thriller. Goerges has been pretty steady since Wimbledon and I think she might be better off physically with Tsurenko having some issues with her leg.

WTA Moscow R2 Predictions for Wednesday
Day 3 – 3/6
Vandeweghe d. Tsurenko in 2 sets – I don’t think Tsurenko was 100% in her first round match. Never quite sure with Vandeweghe but she is going for Singapore 2nd alternate and will also want matches before Zhuhai – big points up for grabs there.
Mladenovic d. Sasnovich in 3 sets – Mlads speaking a good game with her knee. The rest will likely have been good mentally too. I think she can win this, Sasnovich not an easy match-up though. On the fence…
Vikhlyantseva d. Vesnina in 2 sets – Vik. had a good run in St. Petersburg indoors and after a good win over Kanepi in the first round, I actually like her for the upset win over Vesnina here.
Kasatkina d. Siniakova in 2 sets – First time match-up, I think Kasatkina’s consistency and reliability will prevail here.
Cornet d. Rybarikova in 2 sets – One match too many for Rybarikova I guess. Cornet played well in her first round match and had some excellent matches in Asia too.
Goerges d. Putintseva in 2 sets – Poots was great vs. Pervushiina, not convinced about whether she can back it up!
Sevastova d. Begu in 2 sets – Sevastova has won three of their four previous encounters in straight sets. Going for the steadier player in Sevastova.
Gavrilova d. Lapko in 3 sets – Not a scooby, Gavrilova had the schedule from hell but she’ll keep on battling…

WTA Moscow R1 Predictions for Tuesday
Day 2 – 2/6
Sharapova d. Rybarikova in 2 sets – Both reached finals last week so will clearly be feeling some fatigue – Sharapova more so with the jet lag having come from Asia. Rybarikova clearly seemed to be bothered with an injury in the Linz final.
Kasatkina d. Pavlyuchenkova in 3 sets – Thoughts in Monday’s Set Points post
Kr. Pliskova d. Gavrilova in 3 sets – Tough ask for Gavrilova to recover from the Hong Kong final. I think she’ll give it a good go but Kr. Pliskova will ultimately prevail. In their only previous match, Gavrilova won, 7-5 4-6 7-5 in the first round of New Haven earlier this year.
Goerges d. Monova in 2 sets – Monova is playing her first WTA main draw match. Goerges has done pretty well this year at winning matches you’d expect her to win.
Kanepi d. Vikhlyantseva in 3 sets – Tough one, i’d fancy the winner to reach the SFs. Kanepi has won 15 of her last 16 matches – it doesn’t matter what level you win at, a win is a win!
Rybakina d. Begu in 3 sets – A long shot but why not, it’s the final week! Begu’s lost her last three on tour and the 18-year-old, Rybakina had some excellent wins in qualifying. Rybakina is playing her first WTA main draw.

WTA Moscow R1 Predictions for Monday
Day 1 – 1/5
Vekic d. Siniakova in 3 sets – Neither have been in great immediate form – Siniakova has lost eight of her last ten, while Vekic has lost her last four. Siniakova won their only previous encounter in Birmingham last year, 6-3 6-0. While more concerned about her physical health, i’d be more convinced by Vekic winning this clash.
Makarova d. Cornet in 2 sets – Never quite sure which Cornet will show up as she has bagged some impressive wins throughout this year. I’d give the nod to Makarova on home soil who continued her excellent summer hard court season with a solid Asian swing.
Putintseva d. Pervushina in 3 sets – Close to 50-50 for me, Poots has struggled for wins of late and just lets the frustration get the better of her. I don’t know much about the 17-year-old, Pervushina – a great opportunity.
McHale d. Tsurenko in 2 sets – After a pretty dire year, McHale had an excellent Asian swing where she won 11 matches. I think this could be a good match-up for the American.
Babos d. Sasnovich in 3 sets – A coin toss for me. Babos leads the head-to-head, 2-0 although the pair haven’t played for over two years.
