WTA Hong Kong Final Prediction for Sunday

Day 7 – 1/1

Pavlyuchenkova d. Gavrilova in 2 sets – Gavrilova won their only previous match, 7-5 4-6 6-3 in Moscow at the end of last year. In a final, i’d favour Pavs’s bold hitting, which has been there all week as she has yet to drop a set in HK.

WTA Hong Kong QF Predictions for Friday

Day 5 – 3/4

Brady d. Gibbs in 3 sets – Gibbs leads their head-to-head, 2-0, but my instinct was Brady for the win.

Gavrilova d. Cabrera in 2 sets – Cabrera had a big win over Kontaveit a few weeks back, yet i’d say that Gavrilova will ultimately be too solid from the baseline.

Wang Qiang d. Stosur in 3 sets – Tough one, Stosur played a greattt match against Radwanska. I like Wang Qiang’s game though and she has improved so much in the last year. I’m intrigued to see how her game stacks up against Stosur in a first career match-up.

Osaka d. Pavs in 3 sets – A coin toss – changed my mind several times! The win over Venus was huge for Naomi.

WTA Hong Kong R2 Predictions for Thursday

Day 4 – 1/2

Svitolina d. Gibbs in 2 sets – Svits leads the head-to-head, 2-0 although both wins featured at least a tiebreak. Even with the leg issue, i’d expect Svitolina to be just too solid.

Zhang Shuai d. Brady in 3 sets – Brady enjoyed a first WTA win of the year in the first round. Zhang Shuai will present a stern challenge after she didn’t drop a game to Nara in the first round. I’ll go with this one as the closest match of the day.

Wozniacki d. Cabrera in 2 sets – Woz playing with bundles of confidence right now.

Wang Qiang d. Kumkhum in 2 sets – This will be their eighth career match-up! Wang has won the last five all in straight sets.

WTA Hong Kong R1 Predictions for Tuesday

Day 2 – 8/10

Radwanska d. Zhang Ling in 2 sets – Aga for the win.

V.Williams d. Ozaki in 2 sets – This is a repeat match-up as the pair played in the first round of Hong Kong last year too! While Venus hasn’t played since the US Open, I think this is an ideal match-up for the American. Ozaki is a solid player, yet will likely come in with not a great deal of confidence having won just three of her last 20 matches.

Svitolina d. Diyas in 2 sets – Not a walk in the park for Svitolina as Diyas has had a stirring comeback including a first WTA title in Tokyo last month. Diyas also won their only previous match-up in Beijing back in 2011, 6-1 6-3. I’d go for one tight and one straightforward set for Svits.

Wozniacki d. Bouchard in 2 sets – Star power in terms of the match-up yet really, the form book would suggest a comfortable start for Wozniacki.

Gavrilova d. Kato in 3 sets – The pair have played once before and that was also in Hong Kong! I think the pair have similar games so it could be a fun scrap.

Vesnina d. Kumkhum in 3 sets – Kumkhum can be a tricky opponent and took a set off Ostapenko last month in the semi-finals of Seoul.

Pavlyuchenkova d. Babos in 3 sets – Babos seems to be building some confidence after reaching the finals of her last two tournaments in singles in Quebec City and Tashkent. Their last match earlier this year in Monterrey went to 7-5 in the third set. A similar scoreline wouldn’t surprise me.

Osaka d. Guarachi in 2 sets – Can’t say i’ve ever come across Alexa Guarachi who is playing her first ever WTA main draw match at the age of 26. An ideal match-up for Osaka to snap a five match losing streak.

Hon d. Cako in 3 sets – Hon won their only previous match in straight sets and reached the quarter-finals of Seoul last month.

Brady d. Eguchi in 3 sets – Something will have to give here as neither player has won a WTA main draw match in 2017. Brady’s last win on the WTA tour came in Guangzhou 2016, while for Eguchi it was in Nanchang last year.

WTA Hong Kong R1 Predictions for Monday

Day 1 – 6/6

Stosur d. Lee in 2 sets – Lee’s only previous win at tour level was in Hong Kong in 2015 when she beat the world #212. Stosur lost her first three matches since coming back from the hand injury but won her first match in Beijing against Siniakova. Not a complete guarantee but a good draw on paper for Stosur.

Zhang Shuai d. Nara in 2 sets – Zhang leads the head-to-head, 2-0 although the pair haven’t played in more than two years. Both have been playing some decent tennis of late, particularly Zhang who has won eight matches since the US Open. Zhang is the bigger hitter and I think she will come through as I would guess that confidence is fairly high.

Wang Qiang d. Chang in 2 sets – Chang won their first three matches in straight sets, yet it was Wang who recorded a first win when they played at Wimbledon earlier this year, 6-3 6-4. Wang’s having a great year.

Gibbs d. Grammatikopoulou in 3 sets – Yep still not learnt that name by heart! Expecting a close match.

Cabrera d. Aoyama in 3 sets – The pair have played once before with Cabrera winning at ITF level on grass in Japan last year, 6-7(4) 6-4 6-1. Cabrera had a superb run in Guangzhou including a win over Kontaveit. Aoyama is playing her first WTA main draw match of the year.

Rogers d. Jang in 2 sets – Jang’s last main draw win at tour level came in Tokyo (International event) last year. Rogers has had a decent year without a standout win. Her best result was a quarter-final appearance in Charleston. A good draw on paper for Rogers…
