Day 6 – 1/1
Muguruza d. Cornet in 2 sets – A little concerned by Muguruza’s fatigue but I think she’s in the zone.
Pliskova d. Svitolina in 3 sets – Swaying between the two, I think this will be close!

Day 5 – 2/4
Kerber d. Svitolina in 3 sets – Not the best informed with any of these matches to be honest but I do think Kerber will win this match despite losing to Svitolina at the back end of 2016. From what I saw of Svitolina against Rogers, I think she’ll need to step it up quite a few notches to challenge Kerber.
Pliskova d. Vinci in 2 sets – Vinci’s having a superb week so far and has a 2-0 head-to-head record over Pliskova. I think this will be a good test of Pliskova’s credentials… and I fancy her to rise to the challenge.
Muguruza d. Kuznetsova in 2 sets – Kuznetsova’s had the more routine run so far with two straight setters but I think Muguruza will benefit from having been severely tested so far this week and having had to raise her level when it counted. This must have given her bundles of confidence.
Cibulkova d. Cornet in 3 sets – The pair played in back-to-back weeks in Wuhan and Beijing last year with both matches going the distance. Expecting another three setter with Cibulkova’s mental toughness bringing her through in the end.

Day 4 – 2/4
Zhang d. Cibulkova in 3 sets – Preview
Kerber d. Barty in 2 sets – This should be a great match for the crowd. I can see Barty keeping at least one of the sets very close but going for Kerber in two.
Kuznetsova d. Aiava in 2 sets – A great opportunity for Aiava, but I think Kuznetsova will be too strong. Wouldn’t be surprised if Aiava were to get a set as Kuznetsova can go off on a tangent sometimes but gone for straights.
Doi d. Vinci in 2 sets – Vinci had a massive win from multiple match points down on Monday & players can often use that boost of confidence to their advantage. Doi though had an excellent win over Makarova in the first round and has an underrated game… I definitely underestimated Doi in the first round! Vinci is one of those players you can either love or hate to play and the pair have never played so it’s a tough one to call for that reason.

Day 3 – 4/4
Pliskova d. Muhammad in 2 sets – Pliskova for the win.
Muguruza d. Kasatkina in 3 sets – Preview
Cornet d. McHale in 3 sets – On the fence with this one, all three of their previous matches have gone the distance.
Svitolina d. Rogers in 2 sets – I was annoyed for going vs. Svitolina in the first round but I went with my intial instinct. Svitolina and Rogers played a tough three setter in Osaka in 2014, but I think this will be a more straightforward match for the Ukrainian player.

Day 3 – 1/1
Aiava d. Mattek-Sands in 2 sets – Fascinated to watch Aiava for the first time, a 16-year-old Aussie who dropped just eight (!) games through three qualifying matches. I’m pleased to see BMS make a bright start to the year – it took her until April last year to win three singles matches. I’m just getting a sense that Aiava could be this year’s Samantha Crawford in Brisbane.
WTA Brisbane Monday R1 Predictions
Day 2 – 4/6
Puig d. Svitolina in 3 sets – Match of the day for me, very intrigued to see how Svitolina gets on. I will make a point that I am underestimating the power of the counter-punchers on this quick court! I’m going to stick with my instinct, not that that has always served me well in the past.
Muguruza d. Stosur in 2 sets – When you combine 2016 form, the crowd and speed of the court for Stosur, I think it will be a comfortable win for Muguruza.
Krunic d. Barty in 3 sets – If i’m honest, I am disappointed this is the night match (so therefore one I should hopefully be able to watch). Home support could work in Barty’s favour, but Krunic has been delivering some impressive results through the qualifying tournament so i’m going for the Serb.
Kuznetsova d. Chirico in 3 sets – An upset alert for sure… as I write this, i’m already thinking i’ve gone the wrong way! The reason I came back around to Kuznetsova is that she seems to have been working super hard in the off-season and her record in first rounders during the second half of 2016 was superb.
Tsurenko d. Vinci in 3 sets – Vinci did well in Brisbane last year as the fast courts suit her game. Tsurenko also has history in Brisbane as a former semi-finalist. While Vinci has won their two previous matches, Tsurenko ended 2016 in superb form and I have some reservations about Vinci and where her game will be. I’m going for the upset…
Muhammad d. Vekic in 2 sets – Favouring the qualifier, Muhammad for having played three matches already.
Zhang d. Siegemund in 2 sets – I like Zhang in this match-up as I think her sharp strokes will topple Siegemund. Prove me wrong Laura but I do think she could struggle to replicate her 2016 season.

WTA Brisbane Sunday R1 Predictions
Day 1 Scores – 2/6
Bouchard d. Rogers in 3 sets – I’m looking into my crystal ball and i’m totally clueless (normally just clueless ;-)) with this one. I’ll give Bouchard the benefit of the doubt to make a decent start.
Pliskova d. Putintseva in 3 sets – As written in my main draw preview, I think Pliskova is the far superior player but believe that Putintseva might grab a set because of her intensity and doggedness.
Errani d. McHale in 3 sets – Expecting a close match but Errani to grit out the win. Errani has won four of their last five matches on tour.
Cornet d. Vesnina in 3 sets – Going with the *upset* in this one although I think this is a very even match-up and almost too close to call.
Begu d. Kasatkina in 3 sets – My instinct is that Begu on a quick court might get the win. To be honest, I hope i’m wrong because i’m very fond of Kasatkina.
Makarova d. Doi in 2 sets – Interesting match-up, siding with Makarova in two tight because she is a little more consistent than Doi.
