WTA Birmingham QF Predictions for Friday
Keys d. Ostapenko in 3 sets – Tough one, Ostapenko has looked very impressive this week. I thought this might be too early for Keys to find her range but she’s started strong! Could see this one going either way. With the weather in Birmingham, it wouldn’t surprise me if some players have had enough and are ready to move onto Eastbourne/Wimbledon…
Kerber d. Suárez Navarro in 2 sets – Kerber has won their two 2016 encounters in straight sets. On grass, i’d fancy this to be the trio.
Pironkova d. Strycova in 2 sets – Pironkova plays her first match of the day and getting the feeling she might be about to go one of these runs…
WTA Birmingham R2 Predictions for Thursday/Friday
Kvitova d. Ostapenko in 3 sets – Preview HERE
Kerber d. Gavrilova in 2 sets – Kerber’s owned the H2H although we saw with Aga-CoCo how that flipped this week. Still, I like Kerber on grass and I think she will be well rested, both physically and mentally.
Strycova d. Watson in 2 sets – Interesting match, Watson was excellent in the first round against Giorgi and served very well. Strycova did seem to pick up an injury against Pliskova but if she’s fit, I think she has more to her game and definitely on grass.
Keys d. Paszek in 2 sets – Great to see Paszek winning matches again on grass. I thought it might be too soon for Keys to find her stride but i’d be surprised if she’s upset in this one.
Suárez Navarro d. Petkovic in 3 sets – Could see this one going either way, winning from 3-5 third set vs. Svitolina might have given Carla a mental boost and Petkovic has had fair share of tight losses, so might have an influence if it goes deep. Both not at their best on the grass but should be a fun one.
Vandeweghe d. McHale in 3 sets – McHale’s won their last two matches and Vandeweghe may be feeling the effects of her run in Rosmalen… but if she serves well, then it’s hard not to see CoCo prevailing.
Begu d. Pironkova in 3 sets – On the fence with this one! Pironkova means business on the grass, but I like Begu also. Begu barely…
Konta d. Wickmayer in 2 sets – Konta for the win
*No idea what I was thinking with that last prediction haha The Grass court GOAT is a contender for this title*
WTA Birmingham R1 Predictions for Tuesday
Kerber d. Peng in 2 sets – A big match for Kerber… Peng can play well on grass but not sure she’s really approaching her best level yet.
Radwanska d. Vandeweghe in 2 sets – Radwanska leads the head-to-head, 4-0 and has never dropped a set to the American. Vandeweghe though will be super confident after her victory in Rosmalen where she didn’t drop a set. Intrigued to see how this one pans out as they’ve never played on grass before. I’d go for a tight two setter with just a slight feeling that CoCo could cause an upset.
Konta d. Doi in 2 sets – Doi won when they last met in Rome but before that, Konta had won their first three matches. A lot depends on whether Konta has recovered from the injury she had in Nottingham. If she’s fit and healthy, I think she wins on grass.
Wozniacki d. Wickmayer in 3 sets – I’ll be shocked if this match gets on court with the forecast! Woz won their first six matches and surprisingly, Wicky has won the last two! Could go either way but feeling like Woz might take it on grass.
Strycova d. Pliskova in 2 sets – Preview HERE
Gavrilova d. Broady in 2 sets – Broady’s serve could be a real weapon on this surface but she won just three games against Hsieh last week in Nottingham. I think Gavrilova will be a similarly tricky opponent, who is very resourceful and throws in lots of different shots. Broady’s chances rely on her serve…
Svitolina d. Suárez Navarro in 3 sets – A tough one, neither particularly comfortable on the grass. Svitolina has never made it past the second round of Wimbledon and won just one match on grass last year. Both are vulnerable against big hitters on grass but that won’t be the case here! Svitolina leads the H2H, 2-1, but their last two matches have both gone the distance. I’m edging towards the “upset” but it’s really close to call between these two and expect three sets.
Begu d. Bencic in 3 sets – Hmmm can’t make my mind up with this one. Bencic is still coming back to her best and should have had a few days off to be ready. Begu can outhit Bencic but the grass court matches in Rosmalen may give BB an edge. I’m torn on this one…
Pironkova d. Tsurenko in 2 sets – Pleased to see Pironkova come through qualifying as she’s currently unable to get into Eastbourne qualifying due to her ranking. She’s also got a decent draw here and could do very well here. I’d be shocked if she didn’t win this one.
Petkovic d. Linette in 3 sets – After so many rough draws, this is a good one for Petko. Still expect it to be a battle on grass though.
Siniakova d. McHale in 3 sets – A repeat of last year’s third round match. Both had to qualify for the main draw this year though! Siniakova is dramatic as anything, but I like her form on grass.
Paszek d. Moore in 2 sets – Great to see Paszek playing well on grass again! Moore had an injury in Nottingham so I fancy the Austrian to take this one despite home support.
WTA Birmingham R1 Predictions for Monday
Keys d. Babos in 3 sets – Interesting opener, both like the grass. Babos thrashed Keys when they last played in Birmingham in 2014. Keys won their most recent match in Rome. I’m really high on Keys for this grass court season but I wouldn’t be surprised if she starts a little slow. I am leaning towards Keys in this match as I think her serve is more effective these days.
Watson d. Giorgi in 3 sets – Watson was disappointing in her opening match in Nottingham but did reveal that she had practised little after the French Open because of an ab problem. Giorgi’s game is perfect for the grass but she seems to have been in and out of the tour of late with issues with the Italian federation and i’m not sure about her commitment to the tour right now. I’d fancy Watson to get the win.
Ostapenko d. Pavlyuchenkova in 3 sets – A question mark for this one. Gone for Ostapenko in my Draw Challenge but don’t really no enough about either player on grass. Ostapenko won a round in ‘s-Hertogenbosch while Pavs is playing her first match on grass. Could be an interesting one.
All these matches are close, which is why i’ve gone three sets for practically all of them! It would not surprise me to come away with a 0/5 for the first day haha! Let’s wait and see…
