Thoughts about the draw
I thought the French Open was hard but I just can’t make any decisions with this draw and have got to the stage where I am totally overthinking it πππ.
So the top quarter of this draw is nuts. Barty, Kerber, Serena, Muguruza, Bencic, Goerges, Sharapova, Vekic, Riske and Kanepi are all in there. A part of me think of thinks they are all going to destroy each other trying to get to the quarters/semis. So fast is the rise of Barty, this is actually the only current Slam she hasn’t made the second week of. I think she’s handling everything marvellously well so far. A couple of months ago I was thinking she had a great shot at the Wimby title. After all the unexpected French glory, i’m not so sure now as the RG-Wimby double is just so rare and she’s had such a huge change to her life with the rise in pressure/expectation/attention. It’s going to be a special run for whoever makes it out of this quarter. I think it’s going to be Kerber or Bencic and have picked the former in my draw.
I’ve ended up with a Pliskova-Bertens final with Pliskova as champ. I said to myself that I wouldn’t have the Eastbourne champ as Wimby champ but here we are… again π. I was just so impressed by Pliskova in Eastbourne and she seemed so relaxed on the practice courts. She’s been knocking on the door at the Slams for a while and keeps putting herself in deep positions so I feel it’s going to break her way at some point. My main concern in Pliskova’s draw is her potential third rounder against Hsieh Su-Wei or Jelena Ostapenko. Both have beaten her before and are tricky opponents on grass – Hsieh will keep the ball low and Ostapenko will just generally crush it. I am wary it could be another Martic sitch all over again but we shall see.
I really like Bertens’s draw and her general consistency throughout 2019. She was bigged up for the French and didn’t get a chance to prove herself due to illness. I think there’s a bit less focus on her at Wimby. I feel her game can still do a lot of damage on this surface and she made QFs here last year. She got a lot of matches on grass through ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Eastbourne. After her early exit at the French, I feel she should be relatively well rested. I also have Halep going pretty deep in this draw. While not a classic grass courter, she’s a three time Wimbledon quarter-finalist which can get overlooked. I’m on the lookout for players who have shown decent form but not yet peaked and i’d lump Bertens and Halep in that category.
From the bottom half of the draw, I fancy good runs for Margarita Gasparyan, Petra Martic, Karolina Muchova and Sofia Kenin. I guess my two surprises in the draw are Bencic over Barty (R4) and Kenin over Osaka (R3). I’m wondering if I am generally underestimating Osaka but Kenin is one to watch IMO.
It’s always a hoot to try and predict the carnage of these draws. As I said for the French, i’m excited to just to see how it all unfolds and enjoy the ride!
