US Open 2019: Draw Predictions

With each Slam draw that passes, filling out a draw has become increasingly hilarious. I didn’t have any clear favourites for this draw when I came to make my picks and the tournaments in Canada and Cincy confused me further. My thoughts whilst filling out the draw…

    • Of the top ten, Halep and Barty are two I have most confidence in. They’ve ended up in my final with Barty as champ. I feel both played well during the summer hard court season but never peaked, and both should come in fresh-ish. I agree with the bookies that Serena is the favourite, but my biggest question mark is whether she can outlast the field physically over the two weeks considering all the injuries she has endured this year.
    • The potential Keys-Kenin R3 clash is a huge match IMO. I’ve been watching Kenin all summer and despite losing to Keys in the Cincy semis, she’s my dark horse pick. I think this it will be her breakthrough Slam run.
    • I think the top quarter will produce a “surprise” semi-finalist. I say surprise but little surprises me on the WTA tour these days 😂. I don’t think Osaka will make the quarter-finals in light of her leg injury at Cincy and coming in as defending champ. It’s a real tough ask to back up last year’s triumph. I’ve gone for Donna Vekic to the semi-finals in my draw, but also like Anett Kontaveit and Belinda Bencic in this top section. A potential Bencic-Kontaveit third rounder could be a key match-up.
    • I really, really, really want to see is Hsieh-Muchova in the second round 😍. Serena-Hsieh in the third round would be absolutely delightful, but i’d happily settle for Serena-Muchova too. Of course i’m getting way ahead of myself. But please, draw gods give us the good stuff.
    • Surface is key – last year they slowed the courts right down which was a real shame because I loved the fast courts in the past. I’m interested to see how the court plays this year.
    • I still enjoy doing a draw for a Slam but I don’t get the same buzz I used to when doing predictions. The WTA is beautifully unpredictable and the depth on tour right now is immense. I personally enjoy not having a clue who is going to win and just watching how it all unfolds.
