Thoughts about the draw
I really struggled with this French Open draw. Normally I have a favourite but not this time so i’ve muddled my way through the draw 😂. The two favourites and best players on clay are clearly Halep and Bertens but I just don’t see them winning IMO.
Halep – I like Simona’s form and I genuinely believe her that she is relishing defending her title… but to defend a Slam title is such a hard thing to do and has rarely been done. I think she’s going to give a good shot but not my champ.
Bertens – The form player for sure. However, I am concerned how she will cope with all the added pressure and expectation. It’s the first time Kiki would have done press before a Slam. The first time Kiki has been genuinely touted as a contender. I think it’s a lot to take in. Personally, i’d love to see Kiki win. Not convinced though.
I often go safe with these draws so i’ve taken a few more risks because I have so much indecision and I do think there will be some “surprises”. The two match-ups that ended up being bottlenecks in my draw were Osaka-Azarenka (R2) and Svitolina-Muguruza (R3). I’ve gone for the underdog in both!
I’ve ended up with a Kvitova-Pliskova final. Petra is a bit of wild card. As i’ve said many times before, she’s always prone to an early loss but if she makes it to that second week, even on clay, she’s an absolute force. I’ve been very impressed with Pliskova’s consistency and resiliency. I think she’s going to be tough to beat, as she has been all season. I think she’s going to be there or thereabouts, but i’m still not sure she’ll push through for her first Slam. I’ve ended up with Petra as my champ 🤔😲😭😂 .
In all honesty, I think it’s going to be a shock winner that will come out of nowhere. I’m excited to watch it all unfold! 🙂
