Set Points

Set Points, Charleston Day 1: Lisicki, Gavrilova and Mladenovic back to winning ways

The main draw for the 2016 Volvo Car Open began in Charleston on Monday. This is one of my favourite tournaments of the year so I am intending to keep up with the Set Points articles during the week. Day 1 saw four seeds in action with one falling at the first hurdle. There were notable wins…

Set Points, Miami Open Day 8: Sveta stuns Serena, Vika-Garbi was great, Timea scores biggest win

After a couple of quiet days at the Miami Open… Magic Monday was EVENTFUL! All eight of the women’s fourth round matches were played on Monday, producing upsets, drama and some high-quality tennis. For a preview of the first quarter-final on Tuesday between Simona Halep and Timea Bacsinszky, click HERE. Read on for Set Points,…

Set Points, Miami Open Day 7: Keys and Konta score big wins, Muguruza-Azarenka is ON!

Third round action wrapped up for the women at the Miami Open on Sunday with a huge first-time match-up set for Magic Monday where all eight fourth round matches are on the schedule. Only three of the top 16 seeds have made the fourth round from the bottom half but interestingly, all top five seeds are…

Set Points, Miami Open Day 6: Comebacks aplenty, Kuznetsova, Watson & Svitolina all rally to win

Day 6 of the Miami Open completed the last 16 match-ups for the top half of the women’s draw… and they are all decent! Saturday saw three come-from-behind victories including two more third set tiebreaks, of which there have been plenty in Miami. For Sunday’s order of play, two previews are up on Moo’s Tennis…

Set Points, Miami Open Day 5: Muguruza-Cibulkova sizzles, Kerber wins & Osaka impresses

Day 5 in Miami saw a string of upsets in the bottom half of the women’s draw with eight seeds going out. However, there was a role reversal from Indian Wells with the two highest seeds, Angelique Kerber and Garbiñe Muguruza, both advancing having lost their openers in the desert. The top half of the women’s draw…

Set Points, Miami Open Day 4: Serena survives, Lucie’s comeback & Aga’s hotshots (again!)

The women’s seeds from the top half of the Miami Open draw came out to play on Thursday. Six fell, but ten survived with a number of tantalising third rounders set for Saturday. In case you missed it, there are previews for two second rounders on Friday featuring Angelique Kerber v Barbora Strycova and Garbiñe Muguruza…

Set Points, Indian Wells Day 7: Seedings hold in the top half, Kasatkina & Rybarikova break through

Indian Well’s version of Magic Monday at Wimbledon with all eight of the women’s fourth round matches on the same day wrapped up on Tuesday. It was a so-so day with two matches unfortunately ended by retirements. I’m reaching the end of the line with Indian Wells already… it’s been a great tournament so far and the…

Set Points, Indian Wells Day 6: Rybarikova upsets Bencic, missed smashes and Vinci victorious

In the only upset of the day, Magdalena Rybarikova defeated the number seven seed, Belinda Bencic, 6-4 3-6 6-3. BB was disappointing and just couldn’t get going in that third set. In hindsight, I don’t think this surface suits her game and particularly against someone with such a funky game. Credit to Magda though who…

Set Points, Indian Wells Day 5: Serena roars past Poots, Aga’s hotshots & Petra survives again

The remaining five seeds in the top half of the 2016 BNP Paribas Open women’s draw all successfully advanced to the fourth round. It was a much calmer day with four of those five seeds untroubled in straight sets. Read on for my Set Points summary of day 5 with help from Tennis Twitter. For Monday’s line-up, check…

Set Points, Indian Wells Day 4: Another rollercoaster day, Allertova and McHale ride the upset train

Are you not entertained? Day 4 was another wacky, wild and entertaining day in the desert. While more seeds survived than fell on day 4 at the 2016 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the number two and four seeds were both vanquished in straight set losses. Many of the seeds were challenged and some battled…
