I’ve broken my rule in going for the champ of a big tournament before a Slam. To be honest I went into this draw thinking that i’d have Barty going deep but losing somewhere. Just couldn’t do it. There are certainly some pitfalls along the way for Barty. I think Tauson in round two has the kind of unpredictable, still unknown game to an extent, that could catch fire. Sorribes Tormo or Muchova in the fourth round would certainly give Barty something to think about as both have beaten her this year. I think Bencic could be a threat in the quarters… but I don’t even have that match-up! In the end, i’ve copped out a bit to be honest and stuck with Ash. She was so good in Cincy. I’m taken with how incredibly reliable she has been this year.
I still feel Krejcikova is floating under the radar and she’s my pick from the bottom half. Krejcikova’s last three losses in singles have been against the eventual champs. I think she has a favourable draw to open. I wanted to go for Sabalenka to reach the final but Collins, Jabeur and Krejcikova are all tough match-ups and I went for the latter to take out Aryna.
Elsewhere, my biggest surprise is probably Badosa to the semi-finals. I like Paula’s draw and have been really impressed with her form all year. It’s a long shot with Pliskova in her section but just went with my heart on that one. The third quarter is a brute. I fancied Gauff as a semi-finalist, finalist, that was before the draw. I just can’t ignore the route. In the end, I went for Kerber who has looked very strong at her last three tournaments and loves a quick court which I think US Open is.
