As the rain halted the second round match between Nick Kyrgios and Dustin Brown just three points in over on Court 2, the first blockbuster clash of the day to get fully underway was Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro under the Centre Court roof.
And Delpoooooooo won! It was the Argentine’s first top 5 win since October 2013 as he came from a set down to beat an out-of-sorts Wawrinka, 3-6 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3. There wasn’t a lot to call between the pair in the stats but Delpo was the more consistent player after the first set and served generally better.
It was awesome to hear the sound of the ball being hit under the Centre Court and there were some crunching rallies. There were also a few fun moments, one involving an errant challenge from Stan.

The rain eventually abated for Kyrgios and Brown to resume on court 2. With so much going on, I was dipping in and out but what I saw of it was super entertaining… as expected! Kyrgios was shouting at his box when he went down two sets to one, but he came back to win in five, 6-7(3) 6-1 2-6 6-4 6-4. Brown came up with one of the shots of the day.
Kyrgios’s press conference was also eventful… but when has it ever been uneventful?!
With all the WTA drama for Venus and Serena, I was kind of late to notice the match on Court 1 between Novak Djokovic and Sam Querrey. At close of play, Querrey leads by two sets to love, 7-6(6) 6-1! I’m excited as i’ll be on Court No.1 tomorrow so will get to see how this one plays out. The rain seemed to come at a good time for Djokovic and while he faces a tough ask, i’ll genuinely be stunned if he doesn’t turn it around and win in five.
Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, John Isner and Lucas Pouille all won in straight sets and beat the rain to book their places in the last 32.
There were words exchanged at the end of the match between Feliciano Lopez and Fabio Fognini… drama, drama, drama! Lopez came from two sets down to score a 3-6 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3 6-3 in three hours and eight minutes.
In the final completed match of the day, Roger Federer comfortably saw off Dan Evans in straight sets under the Centre Court roof, 6-4 6-2 6-2. The only second round men’s match that didn’t finish featured Alexander Zverev and Mikhail Youzhny with the pair on serve early in the fifth set.
A few highlights from Thursday. In case you didn’t see it, Viktor Troicki had one almighty outburst. I remember when he forced the cameraman to show a mark in Rome three years ago but i’m still flabbergasted by his behaviour.
Grigor Dimitrov just started his third round match against Steve Johnson but here he is having Thursday’s shot of the day. I’m pleased to see him having some joy on a tennis court.

I felt like Djokovic was in for an upset here but I hadn’t expected it to be so early in the tournament! It’s not unrealistic to expect him to win but I wouldn’t be shocked if he didn’t!

Happy for Del Potro,he seems to be still slicing his bhand,still when that fhand is on.like in the match if reminds me of Del Potro a few years ago.

I am in the minority when it comes to Djokovic, unlike others I believe his strength is purely mental and physical (fitness).
If he is mentally not there then I think he can lose to many, unlike Federer who has a lot of game to fall back on even if he isnt mentally all there.

How do you explain how he was successful pre 2014 when his mental strength was questionable or pre 2011 when his fitness was relatively poor?
I’m tired of Federer fans trying to put Djokovic down. He now has a great, clean serve, the best return ever (because he doesn’t try to blast winners), one of the strongest double handed backhands ever and his forehand is one of the most underrated shots in mens tennis because he dictates and changes direction at will and can hit it with plenty of spin or really flatten it out.

I am not a Federer fan, I prefer Djokovic’s style of play, but I am not blind to Federer’s talent.

I did not think Novak would win Wimbledon this year,though I never thought it would be Sam Querry that would defeat him,Novak was out of sorts in the match.

Neither did I. I thought Raonic or Cilic would surprise him. I still think one of those two will be finalist on that side of the draw.

Couldn’t catch the match, had an event to attend to. But, I kept thinking it was not going to be in Novaks favour, the rain delay. I figured Novak would have found a way in the best of five with Sam tiring along the way without the interruption . But the delay would recharge Sam as well and he was much sharper than Djokovic in the first 2 sets. Anyway it was a tough ask coming in reaching for a fifth straight slam. Regardless of his dominance so far this season there have ben some rough edges. Reminds me of Thiems loss.
I cant put my finger on the real reason why, but I dont see Raonic getting the better of Novak. I think Djokovic has a mental edge over him. He’ll really have to all aces to best him in 5.
