WTA Kuala Lumpur Final Preview: Caroline Wozniacki v Alexandra Dulgheru

Caroline WozniackiThe final of the 2015 BMW Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur will be contested between the number one seed, Caroline Wozniacki and Alexandra Dulgheru.  It’s been a fine couple of weeks for Dulgheru, who is into a WTA final for the first time since 2010.  Dulgheru won back-to-back titles at the former Premier event in Warsaw in 2009 and 2010.  Dulgheru has been plagued by a long list of multiple injuries that have kept her on the sidelines for considerable chunks of the last four years.  Now seemingly healthy, Dulgheru is producing some solid results.  Dulgheru has beaten a quartet of big hitters in Kuala Lumpur with victories over Sabine Lisicki, Ying-Ying Duan, Julia Goerges and Jarmila Gajdosova.  In one of the longest WTA matches of the year so far, Dulgheru edged Gajdosova in the semi-finals, 5-7 7-5 7-6(4) in three hours and 14 minutes.  Dulgheru saved FOURTEEN break points in the deciding set, which featured no breaks of serve.  It was a tough loss for Jarka who was in tears at the end.  It was a nice handshake though…

Wozniacki hasn’t been troubled at all this week and is yet to lose more than four games in any of the eight sets she has played this week.  Victories over Yafan Wang (#160), Lin Zhu (#122), Carina Witthoeft (#81) and Su-Wei Hsieh (#181) have launched the Dane into her second WTA final of 2015 after reaching the final in Auckland in the first week of the year.  Wozniacki and Dulgheru played just last week in Doha where the Romanian was forced to retire from their second round match due to illness.  Their only previous match before last week was at the French Open in 2010.  I remember going for Dulgheru in that match-up because she is a very competent clay courter.  Wozniacki won through in straight sets, 6-3 6-4.  Dulgheru is bound to be tired after two very taxing weeks and a brutal semi-final match.  In my opinion, Caro to win in straight sets..

Prediction: Wozniacki d. Dulgheru in 2 sets

  1. Wozniacki hasn’t even played anyone that good. She played what a Wild Card (#181) in the semi-final.

While Dulgheru got through Lisicki (#28) in straight sets, Duan in straight sets, Julia Goerges (#65) in straight sets and Gajdosova (#52) in 3 sets.

Dulgheru did make mistakes. She had a huge lead in the first set and just couldn’t close out games where she was up like 40-15. She really could of beat Gajdosova in straight sets. If Dulgheru can correct some of these mistakes I think can put up a good fight against an overconfident Wozniacki.

She may or may not win but I think she is capable of at least stealing a set if she plays well.
