After four days of relative calm in the men’s draw, Friday saw the biggest shock of the tournament as Andreas Seppi beat Roger Federer in four sets. Seppi was tremendous and produced an incredible pass on match point… I’m still processing this information. Anyway, some quick thoughts about the men’s matches on day 6.
Novak Djokovic d. Fernando Verdasco in 3 sets: Djokovic in three, I don’t see this being an issue for the world number one. He came into the tournament under the weather, but rolled through his first two rounds.
John Isner d. Gilles Muller in 5 sets: Muller has worked his way back into the top 50 and has been in good form in 2015, reaching the quarter-finals of Chennai and the semi-finals of Sydney. Isner leads the head-to-head 3-0. Tiebreaks? Oh yes.
Jerzy Janowicz d. Feliciano Lopez in 4 sets: A victory at the Hopman Cup with Aga Radwanska seems to have done wonders for Jerzy’s confidence. I had him in my top ten for my 2014 ATP predictions (LOUD AND PROUD) and although that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon, I still believe in his talent. A five set win over Monfils was a brilliant result and I think he will carry that confidence into this match against Lopez.
Milos Raonic d. Benjamin Becker in 3 sets: Raonic has become one of the most reliable players on the ATP tour. I have confidence in Raonic winning these types of matches.
Stan Wawrinka d. Jarkko Nieminen in 3 sets: Stan’s had a breeze of a draw. In a best of five set match, I don’t fancy Nieminen to give Wawrinka much of a workout.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. Vasek Pospisil in 3 sets: An all unseeded third round match is not a surprise in a section that housed Dolgopolov and Fognini. I orginally had Pospisil to the fourth round, but i’m changing my mind after I read that Vasek was strugling with an injury.
David Ferrer d. Gilles Simon in 4 sets: Ferrer’s match with Stakhovsky was good entertainment. I’d fancy him to lose another set and face his toughest match against Simon, who remains dangerous. Simon won their last match at the US Open…
Kei Nishikori d. Steve Johnson in 3 sets: Credit to Johnson for making the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in his career. Nishikori lost his first set against Dodig in the second round, but I think he’ll come through this one in straights with one tiebreak.

I think Lopez will beat Jerzy.

I have to say I am somewhat satisfied to see Fed out so early, if only to silence some of his gobbier fans who were CONVINCED that he’d be back at #1 very soon. It’s unlikely he will now because he has a fair amount of points to defend before the clay season.

Fed played OK and that wasn’t good enough . His opponent stayed in the match and didn’t crumbled like Monfil. Fed wasn’t able to raise his game . Fed and Kei had the toughest draw just like Serena, Caroline and Petra, where you can’t have a of day.

I think Andy Murray had the toughest draw of them actually, though made much easier with Federer out and Nadal and Dimitrov looking ropey.
