I’m not quite sure what happened yesterday, but I was unable to get into my WordPress account from my home internet and couldn’t get the site to work either. Thankfully, after logging a call with WordPress Support they managed to fix the problem last night. I was out having a non-tennis day yesterday and was absolutely staggered to see the result of the first of the women’s semi-final. Venus Williams defeated her sister Serena, 6-7(2) 6-2 6-3 to move into the final of Montreal. I wrote yesterday about how impressed I was with Venus’s fight and I am just bowled over by her performances this week. It sounded like a fabulous match. Venus will take on Agnieszka Radwanska in the final after the world number five defeated the in-form Ekaterina Makarova, 7-6(1) 7-6(3). By all accounts, it was another great match and it was a big win for Aga having lost her last two matches against Makarova.
Trying to come to a conclusion as to who will win this match is pretty impossible. Nothing that has happened this week makes sense. Venus suffers from Sjogren’s Syndrome and I think, when you see her produce the performances that she has done this week that it’s easy to forget about her health issues. It’s hard to imagine how difficult it is unless you actually suffer from the condition. Venus has won four of her five matches in three sets. It has been an extraordinary week for Venus and she has played some tremendous tennis. On the other hand, I really didn’t think Radwanska would make the final. One week ago, she lost to Varvara Lepchenko in a really ropey performance in Stanford. I put my hands up. I thought she was slumping, but Aga has proven that’s certainly not the case in Montreal. Tennis has a habit of making you look like a fool (well it does to me since I put myself out there by making predictions) and I feel this year has become really difficult to make any meaningful predictions. I’m not sure if there is anyone out there who would have predicted a Venus-Aga final.
I’ve got no idea who is going to win. This was my thought process… my original instinct was Venus. If she has some energy left after this gruelling week, she has the ability to overpower Aga. However it’s very likely Venus may be seriously fatigued in the final. In a list of players you would least likely want to play when you’re tired, Radwanska would be pretty high, if not top of the list. This week has made no sense. Therefore, i’m going to stick with instinct and go for Venus. I’m looking forward to a good match. If Venus does have something left in the tank, I really think it will be a great match. Montreal has been fantastic this week and women’s tennis continues to go from strength to strength.
