Grigor Dimitrov prevented a repeat of the 2013 Wimbledon final (lucky us) as he produced a sensational display to beat Andy Murray and set up a tantalising semi-final with Novak Djokovic. I’m relieved that Murray has gone out because the BBC coverage in the UK has been absolutely exhausting. Even today they were midway through previewing Kvitova v Safarova to cut to an interview with Brad Gilbert discussing where Andy goes from now. Then they had a whole segment about Murray’s body language and his frustration. Absolutely pathetic. Even more, BBC Sport posted this on their Twitter account…
I think most people expected Dimitrov to give Murray a tough match, but no one predicted the one-sided nature of their quarter-final match. Dimitrov was in fabulous form as he outslugged Murray and played the big points much better, winning 6-1 7-6(4) 6-2. Murray didn’t play a great match, but I think part of that could be attributed to how well Grigor played. Dimitrov is now into a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time in his career and looks at ease on the grass. His confidence will be sky high as he is undefeated on the grass in 2014 after winning the Queens title two weeks ago. Djokovic needed five sets to fend off Marin Cilic, 6-1 3-6 6-7(4) 6-2 6-2 in the quarters. It was a shame that Cilic couldn’t sustain his good form in the final set. It was a tougher match than anticipated for Djokovic, particularly after he cruised through the first set. Djokovic is now into his fifth consecutive Wimbledon semi-final.
Djokovic leads the H2H with Dimitrov 3-1; Dimitrov’s sole win came back in Madrid last year. It was a fantastic match; despite the win for Dimitrov, it highlighted his frailties as he was cramping in the second and third sets. When they played a month later at Roland Garros, Dimitrov was crushed in straight sets, 6-2 6-2 6-3. Since that last match, Dimitrov’s progression has been quite remarkable. He looks to have a great deal of belief in his game right now. Going in Dimitrov’s favour is that Djokovic has not performed well in some of the big matches he has played at the Grand Slams in the last couple of years.
When I think of Djokovic v Dimitrov, I keep thinking back to Djokovic’s incredible semi-final with Juan Martin del Potro. I think this is going to be another hugely entertaining five setter. I nearly went for Dimitrov, but lost my bottle. Djokovic for the win… just.
Prediction: Djokovic d. Dimitrov in 5 sets
