WTA Indian Wells, Quarter-Final Preview: Can Jankovic do the Caro-Aga double?

My original men’s draw has been completely decimated to the ground; however my women’s draw is actually doing OK.  Both my finalists, Li and Halep, are still in the draw.  You now know that by me mentioning this, both will go and get knocked out on Wednesday! In yesterday’s polls, 60% of people correctly went for Jankovic to beat Wozniacki.  After being 50/50 for a time, Halep pulled away with 62% of votes to beat Bouchard.  Halep-Bouchard delivered a reasonable third set where Genie just went for too much at the end of the match as Halep, steady and mentally solid, pulled out another tough win.

1. Jelena Jankovic v Agnieszka Radwanska (WTA IW, QF)

Jankovic

Jelena Jankovic

Jelena Jankovic scored a huge win over Caroline Wozniacki in Tuesday’s day session at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.  JJ played a terrific match, dominating from the baseline and recovering from 1-3 down in the first set to take the next 10 games and the match, 6-3 6-1.  The manner of the defeat will ring alarm bells for Wozniacki.  The Dane looked so sad at one of the changeovers and close to tears, which I have never seen from her on the tennis court (apart from that hysterical moment in Doha).  These are tough times and goodness knows what is going on with her coaching situation.  I read that Piotr is doing the on-court coaching, but Michael Mortensen is working with her behind the scenes.  Wozniacki will fall outside of the top 15 after this loss, which just sounds plain weird.  On a happier note, JJ is enjoying her tennis again and could crack the top five again this week if results go her way.

Jankovic will meet Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter-finals after the Pole defeated Alize Cornet, 7-5 6-3  Radwanska leads the head-to-head with Jankovic by 4 wins to 1.  The last time they played was in Tokyo in 2012 when Radwanska won, 6-2 7-5.  Jankovic went into her match with Wozniacki having lost her last five games and against Radwanska, she faces a similar challenge.  Breaking down the defences is a challenge for JJ, but she proved against Wozniacki, that aggressive tennis coupled with solid serving will get the job done…

Prediction: Jankovic d. Radwanska in 3 sets

WTA Indian Wells Quarter-Final Prediction

Simona Halep d. Casey Dellacqua in 2 sets (1 tight, 1 easy)

  1. Oh Caro….. :–( thankfully she doesn’t have really any points to defend in a long time so maybe, just maybe, if things work out well, she’ll return to the top-10 this season.

    • Things are not working out great for Caro and another unsuccessful coaching venture. It sounds like she is going back to Piotr again. Not sure what to make of it all. It seems like she is stuck in a funk between two different game styles.
