The order of play in Acapulco is beginning awfully late at 4pm local time every day, which means that it all takes place while I am asleep. All the first round matches wrapped up yesterday and the entire slate of second round matches will play on Wednesday. Credit to the schedulers for not relegating the women to the car park. Each day there have been two mens and two womens matches on the Centre Court, which is surprising, but very encouraging to see.
1. Kaia Kanepi v Julia Goerges (WTA Acapulco, R2)
The best women’s match on Wednesday features two hard hitters, Kaia Kanepi and Julia Goerges, battling for a place in the quarter-finals. Kanepi needed three sets to get past Jana Cepelova in the first round, 6-1 3-6 6-2, meanwhile Goerges lost just one game to Marcela Zarcarias. In fact, Goerges lost just five points in the opening set, which even against the Mexican wildcard is remarkable. Kanepi and Goerges are split at 2-2 in their head-to-head with Kanepi winning their most recent match in Beijing at the end of 2013. Goerges has been in much improved form in 2013, but I would still back to Kanepi to come through after a slow start.
2. Andy Murray v Joao Sousa (ATP Acapulco, R2)
Andy Murray was close to being bagelled on Tuesday as he went up against Pablo Andujar in Acapulco. Murray lost the first set, 6-3, but rebounded strongly to take the next two, 6-1 and 6-2. Andujar had taken a set off Rafael Nadal in Rio last week and could have taken the match with two match points. Murray now plays Joao Sousa, who after a rough start to the year, appears to be finding his feet. He reached the quarter-finals in Rio and overcame Adrian Mannarino in the first round, 1-6 6-2 6-2. I think Murray has a great chance to win the title this week and he shouldn’t face too many problems in reaching the quarter-finals.
