ATP Montpellier & Zagreb, Saturday’s Semis: Gasquet-Janowicz, Haas-Evans

This will be the last update from the week’s ATP events in Montpellier, Zagreb and Vina del Mar as from Sunday, I will switch my attention to next week’s events in Doha and Rotterdam.  Doha has seen another big withdrawal with Serena Williams pulling out, which means that Li Na will be the number one seed.  Andy Murray has a wildcard into Rotterdam, meanwhile David Ferrer has replaced Rafael Nadal as the number one seed in Buenos Aires next week.  Not much time tonight so a quick sweep through Saturday’s matches…

ATP Montpellier

Gasquet

Richard Gasquet

Richard Gasquet v Jerzy Janowicz: Gasquet has swept through his matches in convincing fashion, but more surprisingly, so has Janowicz.  I expected the Pole to struggle this week having admitted that he was still struggling with a foot injury after the Australian Open, but he eased past the in-form Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-2 6-4 in the quarter-finals.  Janowicz beat Gasquet in a brilliant match in Rome last year, packed with plenty of drama and a crazy Janowicz performance.  I’m still going for Gasquet to win this one.

Prediction: Gasquet to beat Janowicz in 3 sets

Gael Monfils v Jarkko Nieminen: Nieminen has taken advantage of a slack draw and needed a third set tiebreak to get past Marc Gicquel in a third set tiebreak.  Monfils had a much tougher match against Denis Istomin on Friday and is still unbeaten against anyone other than Rafael Nadal in 2014.

Prediction: Monfils to beat Nieminen in 2 sets

ATP Zagreb

Haas

Tommy Haas

Marin Cilic v Bjorn Phau: Cilic overcame Ivan Dodig in a tight two setter on Friday, meanwhile Phau maintained his dream run through the draw, which included beating the second seed, Mikhail Youzhny in the second round.  I would still definitely take Cilic to make the final.

Prediction: Cilic to beat Phau in 2 sets

Tommy Haas v Daniel Evans: It was fantastic to see Evans beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarter-finals, a result I wasn’t expecting despite Kohlschreiber’s irratic nature at these types of events.  For the third consecutive match, Evans takes on a German player in Haas.  After a ropey start to the season, Haas has steadied the ship with two wins in Zagreb.  Evans can definitely win this, but Haas is gaining momentum now and has to be the favourite.

Prediction: Haas to beat Evans in 3 sets
