Following on from the most recent Best of 2016 post which was the best points of the year, here’s my take on the best shots of the year on the WTA tour. It was tough to distinguish between the two at times as some of these are great points too! If there’s any good ones then please pipe up in the comments section. Read on for 25 of the best shots of the year…
Let’s start with a dazzler… I love an around-the-net-post winner and Victoria Azarenka did just that in her second round match at the Australian Open against Danka Kovinic.
In her first Slam final, against the then world number one, Serena Williams and deep in a third set, Angelique Kerber showed clarity of mind to pull out this sensational drop shot winner.
A stunning get from Agnieszka Radwanska on a dropshot from Monica Niculescu in Doha.
You know you’ve done good when the commentator starts giggling hysterically.
Love this dash and dipping cross-court passing shot winner from Elina Svitolina in Dubai.
This is a magnificent shot from Camila Giorgi at Indian Wells… I’m not quite sure how it dipped in but it did!
It’s turning into an Aga-centric post… with her back almost literally against the wall when playing Monica Niculescu again in the desert, Radwanska wins the point with a stunning passing shot winner.
Remarkably, I think this shot from the same match rivals it…
Aga AGAIN in Indian Wells but this time on the other end as Serena Williams broke back in their semi-final to force a second set tiebreak with a sensational passing shot winner.
Drop shot winners off the serve are always special and I don’t think you can get much better than this. I promise other players are featured from now on!
The Kerber forehand passing shot is one of my favourite shots in tennis… this was a pretty special one on match point to defeat Timea Babos in a tight three setter in Miami.
I am marvelling at how Garbiñe Muguruza managed to sneak this fiercely struck forehand on the line.
One of the shots of the year for sure by Irina Falconi. This deserved a lot more attention than it got…
Aga again… this is AWESOME!
A great point overall from the Wimbledon final but this backhand winner from Angelique Kerber is just magnificent. The yelp from Angie before the ball lands in is just perfect!
A huge moment in the third set tiebreak between Eugenie Bouchard and Lucie Safarova in Montreal where Bouchard came up with the goods with this forehand down-the-line that *just* looped in.
Dominika Cibulkova threw the kitchen sink at Eugenie Bouchard in this point but the Canadian player came up trumps in what was arguably her best performance of the year.
This was a scrappy match, but Strycova produced some stunning agility to win this point in the first set.
An incredible retrieval from Simona Halep where she’s out of camera shot at one point!
What an angle from Madison Keys on match point in her semi-final match against surprise package, Kristina Kucova, to secure her place in the final of Montreal.
This forehand from Angelique Kerber in the US Open final was a game changer.
Rightfully so, Kirsten Flipkens won shot of the month for this one. I think it’s shot of the year to be honest…
I’m amazed Wang Qiang managed to do this before a double bounce.
Impressive grafting and then a swivel-shot winner from Daria Gavrilova in Moscow.
And finally, i’m ending with the world number one, Angelique Kerber who produced an extraordinary winner against Agnieszka Radwanska in their semi-final in Singapore.

Some great shots there James. You can just see at the end of the clip of Aga’s dropshot against Alize Cornet in Miami, that Alize clapped the shot (which I thought was nice of her).

I think that I could watch Aga play all day and not get bored ! Some of her shots are amazing and I am sure that she will win WTA shot of the year with one of them and the WTA have issued a video of her best ones this year which I have quickly shared with my friends on fb. Just to say that I think Angelique Kerber has become a more entertaining player to watch this year & she has produced some wonderful tennis shots in 2016.

I’ve always enjoyed watching Kerber but she’s definitely been more aggressive this year and we’ve seen some special forehands down-the-line. And Radwanska too, i’ve developed an appreciation for her game in the last few years. Those shots against Vinci and Niculescu were stunning!
