Phwoo… Day 1 was amazing. I’m on a total US Open high right now! It was a long day as we got through the gates at 10am and didn’t leave until 9pm but it was all worth it and it wrapped up with my favourite match of the day featuring Monica Niculescu and Barbora Strycova. I don’t have time to go into detail about everything I saw so that will come when I get home from New York but for now, here are some of my favourite photos to guide you through my day…
The day started on the practice courts where Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka were all on at the same time!
Caroline Wozniacki had a big win over Taylor Townsend, 4-6 6-3 6-4 in what was the first ever match on the Grandstand Court. Townsend turned around a 1-3 deficit in the first set with some super tennis but had a whole host of drop shot fails in the final two sets as Wozniacki held on for the win.
I was chuffed to catch some of Naomi Osaka for the first ever time… she’s a treat! Osaka came from a set down to defeat CoCo Vandeweghe in three sets, 6-7(4) 6-3 6-4.
The first time in Ashe for Rafael Nadal v Denis Istomin was something I won’t forget… it’s an incredible stadium!
Then it was over to Louis Armstrong to see Garbiñe Muguruza survive a tough opener against Elise Mertens, 2-6 6-0 6-3. The last picture shows her relief after match point.
We watched one set of Taylor Fritz v Jack Sock on Grandstand which I just couldn’t get excited about! Sock eventually prevailed in five sets.
There were some epic celebrations from Pablo Cuevas who beat Dudi Sela in five sets in a brilliant atmosphere.
And finally, the match of the day for me was Monica Niculescu’s win over Barbora Strycova, 6-3 6-7(3) 6-1. I’ll do an individual post for this match at the weekend!
Day 1 was amazing and I can’t wait for Day 2. Lucie up first on the old Grandstand and then an Ashe night session awaits. Time for sleep…
